William Wrigley junior war ein US-amerikanischer Kaugummihersteller, der am 30. September 1861 geboren wurde und am 26. Januar 1932 verstarb. Er übernahm zunächst die Seifenfirma seines Vaters. Im Jahr 1891 gründete Wrigley die Wrigley Jr. Company. Der Einstieg in die Kaugummiherstellung erfolgte eher zufällig. Er hatte die Idee, seinen Seifenpackungen Backpulver beizulegen. Da diese Beilage sehr gut ankam, stieg er auch in das Backpulvergeschäft ein und legte dort Kaugummi bei. Erneut war die Beilage erfolgreicher als das Hauptprodukt, woraufhin Wrigley sich ganz auf die Kaugummiherstellung konzentrierte. Wrigley setzte auf innovative Werbestrategien. So verschickte seine Firma 1915 an jeden US-amerikanischen Telefonbuchteilnehmer vier Streifen Kaugummi, was etwa 1,5 Millionen Menschen erreichte. Vier Jahre später wiederholte er diese Aktion, wobei aufgrund der gestiegenen Anzahl an Telefonanschlüssen über sieben Millionen Produktproben versendet wurden. Im Jahr 1920 begann er in Chicago mit dem Bau des Wrigley Building, das später zu einem bekannten Wahrzeichen der Stadt wurde.
