George Eastman war ein US-amerikanischer Erfinder und Unternehmer, der am 12. Juli 1854 geboren wurde und am 14. März 1932 verstarb. Eastman gründete die bekannten Firmen Kodak und Eastman Chemical mit. Seine Schulausbildung beendete Eastman nicht, da sein Vater starb und er Geld für seine Familie verdienen musste. Mit vierzehn Jahren begann er als Botenjunge für eine Versicherung zu arbeiten und verdiente drei Dollar pro Woche. Da das nicht reichte, besuchte er abends eine Handelsschule und fand später besser bezahlte Jobs im Bankwesen. Im Jahr 1880 wechselte Eastman in die Fotobranche. Er arbeitete mit einem Patentanwalt zusammen, um ein verbessertes Verfahren zur Herstellung von fotografischen Trockenplatten anzumelden. Daraufhin gründete er 1881 mit Henry Alvah Strong die Eastman Dry Plate Company. Ab 1884 produzierte die Firma auch Negativpapier und wurde in The Eastman Dry Plate and Film Company umbenannt. Gemeinsam mit William Walker meldete er 1884 den Rollfilm auf Papierbasis zum Patent an, nachdem er Walker die Erfindung abgekauft hatte. 1886 brachte das Unternehmen seine erste Kamera auf den Markt, die Eastman Detective Camera. Im Sommer 1888 folgte die erste Kamera unter dem Namen Kodak, die Kodak Nr. 1. Eastman ließ die Marke „Kodak“ am 4. September 1888 registrieren und erhielt ein Patent für eine Rollfilmkamera. Ab 1889 hieß die Firma The Eastman Kodak Company. Eastmans Beitrag zur Fotografie war die Öffnung des Marktes durch cleveres Marketing. Er kombinierte eine erschwingliche Kamera mit Film und einem innovativen Service zur Filmentwicklung. Das Motto lautete: „Sie drücken den Knopf, wir machen den Rest“. Die Brownie-Kamera war ab 1900 für einen Dollar erhältlich. War der Film voll, brachte der Kunde die Kamera ins Geschäft, wo der Film entwickelt, Abzüge erstellt und die Kamera neu geladen wurde. Eastman entwickelte auch den Markennamen Kodak, der einprägsam sein sollte. Eastman engagierte sich auch sozial. Er führte als einer der Ersten in seiner Firma freiwillig Altersrente, Arbeitsunfähigkeitsrente, Lebensversicherung und eine Lohndividende für seine Mitarbeiter ein. Außerdem gründete er als Mäzen die Eastman School of Music und spendete große Summen an das MIT und die Universität von Rochester. Er unterstützte auch Kliniken und Stiftungen zur Förderung afroamerikanischer Bürger. Eastman besaß eine große private Gemäldesammlungen und übernahm die finanzielle Verantwortung für die erste kostenlose Zahnklinik für Kinder in Rochester. Im Jahr 1932, als er an einer schmerzhaften Wirbelsäulenerkrankung litt, nahm sich Eastman das Leben und hinterließ einen Zettel mit der Aufschrift: „Meine Arbeit ist getan, warum warten?“.
