Michael Ellis DeBakey war ein US-amerikanischer Herzchirurg, der am 7. September 1908 in Lake Charles, Louisiana geboren wurde und am 11. Juli 2008 in Houston, Texas verstarb. Er kam als Michel Dabaghi zur Welt; seine Eltern waren maronitische Einwanderer aus dem Libanon, die ihren Nachnamen später anglisierten. DeBakey absolvierte seine medizinische Ausbildung an der Tulane University in New Orleans. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg meldete sich DeBakey freiwillig und übernahm die Leitung der Surgical Consultants' Division der United States Army. Während seiner Zeit beim Militär schlug er unter anderem die Einrichtung der Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (M.A.S.H.) vor. 1969 wurde DeBakey Direktor des Baylor College of Medicine. Im selben Jahr erhielt er die Presidential Medal of Freedom, gefolgt von der National Medal of Science im Jahr 1987. DeBakey war 1980 Teil des Ärzteteams, das den jugoslawischen Staatschef Josip Broz Tito behandelte. Ebenfalls 1980 wurde er nach Kairo gerufen, um bei Mohammad Reza Pahlavi eine Splenektomie durchzuführen, was zum Tod des Patienten führte. 1996 leitete DeBakey das internationale Ärzteteam, das Boris Jelzin operierte. Im Laufe seiner Karriere führte DeBakey mehr als 60.000 Operationen durch. Im hohen Alter von 97 Jahren wurde er selbst aufgrund einer Aortendissektion behandelt. DeBakey entwickelte eine Klassifikation für Aortendissektionen, eine Gefäßklemme und Coronarpinzette. DeBakeys erste Frau Diana starb 1972. Er war zweimal verheiratet und hatte mehrere Kinder. Seit 1999 war er ausländisches Mitglied der Russischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. 2008 wurde der Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research, den er 1963 selbst erhalten hatte, ihm zu Ehren umbenannt.

Now called the MicroMed DeBakey VADTM (ventricular assist device), the tiny heart pump received FDA approval for use in critically ill children in early 2004.

JSC2004-E-16052 --- Dr. Michael DeBakey, at right in this file photo, holds the MicroMed-DeBakey VAD (ventricular assist device), a tiny heart-assist pump. With him is one of his heart transplant patients, David Saucier, a NASA Johnson Space Center engineer. They helped develop the idea of using Shuttle fuel pump technology to design the device. It has been implanted into more than 200 patients, and recently was given FDA approval for use for children 5 to 16. It can be a "bridge" to transplant, helping keep patients alive until a donor organ is available.
