JSC2004-E-17555 --- This file photo shows NASA engineer Bernard Rosenbaum and world-renowned heart surgeon Michael DeBakey, M.D., who earned medals from the Space Technology Hall of Fame in 1999 for a heart pump developed from Space Shuttle fuel pump technology. Now called the MicroMed DeBakey VADTM (ventricular assist device), the tiny heart pump received FDA approval for use in critically ill children in early 2004.

During the meeting, one of the primary agenda items was to determine a new permanent location of the library. Those present discussed the pros and cons of approximately ten locations. As part of the following meeting, on April 29, 1957, most of the regents took a bus tour of several of the locations before ultimately deciding, with the encouragement of Michael DeBakey, to house the library on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda.
JSC2004-E-16052 --- Dr. Michael DeBakey, at right in this file photo, holds the MicroMed-DeBakey VAD (ventricular assist device), a tiny heart-assist pump. With him is one of his heart transplant patients, David Saucier, a NASA Johnson Space Center engineer. They helped develop the idea of using Shuttle fuel pump technology to design the device. It has been implanted into more than 200 patients, and recently was given FDA approval for use for children 5 to 16. It can be a bridge to transplant, helping keep patients alive until a donor organ is available.
