Donald Sutherland war ein kanadischer Theater- und Filmschauspieler, der am 17. Juli 1935 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Kanada geboren wurde und am 20. Juni 2024 in Miami, Florida, Vereinigte Staaten verstarb. Sutherland stammte aus einer Familie mit schottischen Wurzeln und wuchs in Hampton und später in Nova Scotia auf. Schon als Schüler arbeitete er als Discjockey bei einem Radiosender. Seine ersten schauspielerischen Erfahrungen sammelte Sutherland im Alter von fünfzehn Jahren in einem Hörspiel. Er war auch als Stand-up-Comedian aktiv. Später studierte er an der Universität von Toronto und schloss sich einer Schauspielgruppe an. Ein Theaterkritiker ermutigte ihn, professioneller Schauspieler zu werden, woraufhin Sutherland nach London ging, um an der Royal Academy of Dramatic Art zu studieren. Anfang der 1960er-Jahre gab Sutherland sein Bühnendebüt. 1964 wurde er für einen Horrorfilm entdeckt, was zu weiteren Rollen führte, darunter Auftritte in Fernsehserien. Eine Referenz von Roger Moore verhalf Sutherland zu einer Rolle in "Das dreckige Dutzend". Seinen Durchbruch feierte er 1970 mit "MASH". Sutherland engagierte sich gegen den Vietnamkrieg. Es folgten Rollen in Filmen wie "Wenn die Gondeln Trauer tragen" und "Die Körperfresser kommen". Sutherland galt als vielseitiger Schauspieler. In den 1990er-Jahren übernahm Sutherland vermehrt Nebenrollen, beispielsweise in "Outbreak – Lautlose Killer". Für seine Leistung in "Citizen X" erhielt er einen Emmy Award. Er spielte weiterhin in Filmen wie "Die Jury" und "Die Tribute von Panem". Zuletzt war er 2023 in der Miniserie "Lawmen: Bass Reeves" zu sehen. Sutherland gab seine Leidenschaft für das Theater nie auf. Donald Sutherland starb nach längerer Krankheit im Alter von 88 Jahren.
