David Packard war ein US-amerikanischer Unternehmer, der am 7. September 1912 in Pueblo, Colorado geboren wurde und am 26. März 1996 in Stanford, Kalifornien verstarb. Zusammen mit Bill Hewlett schuf er den bekannten Technologiekonzern Hewlett-Packard. Vor seiner Zeit als stellvertretender Verteidigungsminister war Packard bereits maßgeblich an der Entwicklung von Hewlett-Packard beteiligt. Nach seinem Bachelor-Abschluss an der Stanford University arbeitete Packard zunächst für General Electric. Später kehrte er nach Stanford zurück, um seinen Master in Elektrotechnik zu erlangen. Im Jahr 1939 gründete er dann gemeinsam mit Bill Hewlett mit einem geringen Startkapital ihr eigenes Unternehmen in einer Garage. Packard übernahm die Rolle des Verwaltungsfachmanns, während Hewlett seine technischen Innovationen einbrachte. Das Unternehmen entwickelte sich zu einem weltweit führenden Hersteller von elektronischen Test- und Messinstrumenten. Zusätzlich etablierte sich die Firma als bedeutender Produzent von Taschenrechnern, Personalcomputern sowie Laser- und Tintenstrahldruckern. Packard war von 1947 bis 1964 Präsident von Hewlett-Packard und anschließend bis 1968 CEO. Danach übernahm er den Vorsitz des Executive Committee von 1972 bis 1993. Im Jahr 1968 wurde Packard von Präsident Richard Nixon zum stellvertretenden Verteidigungsminister ernannt. Er trat sein Amt im Januar 1969 an und übte es bis Dezember 1971 aus. Im Anschluss kehrte er zu Hewlett-Packard zurück. Gemeinsam mit seiner Frau gründete Packard 1964 die David and Lucile Packard Foundation. Dank einer Spende von Packard konnte 1984 das Monterey Bay Aquarium und 1987 das Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute errichtet werden. Sein Sohn, David W. Packard, engagiert sich ebenfalls als Mäzen.
