Count Basie war ein US-amerikanischer Jazz-Pianist, der am 21. August 1904 geboren wurde und am 26. April 1984 verstarb. Basie wurde als letzter der großen Pianisten-Bandleader bekannt. Es gelang ihm, fast 50 Jahre lang ein großes Orchester zu leiten. Basies Vater arbeitete als Kutscher, seine Mutter gab ihm den ersten Klavierunterricht. Später nahm er weiteren Unterricht und bildete sich autodidaktisch weiter. In den 1920ern besuchte er regelmäßig Fats Waller, der ihn in die Kunst der Filmbegleitung einführte. Als Jugendlicher half er in einem Theater aus und untermalte Stummfilme am Klavier. Danach tourte er mit verschiedenen Künstlern durch die Varietés. 1928 schloss er sich den "Blue Devils" an, bevor er 1929 Arrangeur und zweiter Pianist der Bennie-Moten-Band wurde. 1933 wählten die Musiker Basie zum Bandleader. Er gründete seine eigene Band, Count Basie and His Cherry Blossom Orchestra. Nach Motens Tod 1935 stellte Basie eine neue Band zusammen und startete seine Karriere als "Count Basie". 1937 entstanden seine ersten Aufnahmen unter eigenem Namen. Seine Big Band wurde schnell populär, und ihr erster Hit war "One O’Clock Jump". Ende der 1930er-Jahre gewann Basie ein Big-Band-Battle gegen Chick Webb. Ende 1949 musste Basie seine Big Band aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen auflösen, formierte aber 1952 eine neue Band, die "New Testament Band". Mit neuen Arrangeuren und Jazzberühmtheiten feierte er ein Comeback. In den 1950er Jahren gewann Basie zahlreiche Kritiker- und Leserpolls. In den 1960ern folgten Europa-Tourneen und Festival-Auftritte. In den 1970ern nahm er Alben mit Ella Fitzgerald auf, gewann mehrere Grammy Awards und tourte weiterhin international. Seit 1976 war er aufgrund seiner Herzkrankheit oft auf einen Rollstuhl angewiesen. 1979 wurde ein Dokumentarfilm über ihn aufgeführt. 1980 startete Basie seine letzte Europa-Tournee. Der Spitzname "Count" wurde ihm aus Werbegründen gegeben. Basie selbst bevorzugte es, von Freunden und Musikern "Bill" oder "Base" genannt zu werden. 1985 wurde Basie posthum mit der Freiheitsmedaille ausgezeichnet. Nach seinem Tod übernahmen Thad Jones, Frank Foster und später Grover Mitchell die Leitung der Big Band.
