April 1984 in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Kalifornien, USA war ein US-amerikanischer Fotograf, Autor und Lehrer der künstlerischen Fotografie. Er wurde vor allem bekannt durch seine eindrucksvollen Landschafts- und Naturfotografien aus den Nationalparks, National Monuments und den Wilderness Areas im Westen der Vereinigten Staaten, für deren Erhalt er sich zeitlebens einsetzte.
Als Mitbegründer der Gruppe f/64 zählt er zu den Pionieren der straight photography und gilt als einer der bedeutendsten amerikanischen Fotografen.
