Ansel Adams war ein US-amerikanischer Fotograf, der am 20. Februar 1902 in San Francisco, Kalifornien geboren wurde und am 22. April 1984 in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Kalifornien verstarb. Adams erlangte vor allem Anerkennung für seine beeindruckenden Landschaftsaufnahmen, die er in den Nationalparks und Schutzgebieten im Westen der USA machte. Er setzte sich zeit seines Lebens für den Erhalt dieser Gebiete ein. Adams wuchs in San Francisco auf und überstand das Erdbeben von 1906, bei dem er sich die Nase brach. Seine Familie hatte mit finanziellen Schwierigkeiten zu kämpfen, da das Holzhandelsunternehmen des Großvaters in Konkurs ging. Als Kind war Adams oft krank, verbrachte aber viel Zeit in der Natur. Im Alter von zwölf Jahren weckte sein Vater sein Interesse an der Fotografie, und ab 1914 erhielt er Klavierunterricht. Die Weltausstellung von 1915 beeindruckte ihn sehr, besonders die Konzerte. Im Jahr 1916 reiste Adams mit seinen Eltern in den Yosemite-Nationalpark, wo er seine erste Kamera bekam. Er trat dem Sierra Club bei und veröffentlichte 1922 seinen ersten Artikel im Sierra Club Bulletin. Bei einem Ausflug traf er Cedric Wright, mit dem er sich über Musik und Fotografie austauschte. Diese Freundschaft und die Erfahrungen in Yosemite weckten in Adams eine tiefe Faszination für die Natur. Mitte der 1920er Jahre betrachtete er seine Fotos als "visuelles Tagebuch" und perfektionierte sein Handwerk. Ein entscheidender Moment war die Aufnahme von "Monolith, The Face of Half Dome" im Jahr 1927. Durch Albert Bender lernte Adams viele Künstler kennen. 1928 heiratete er Virginia Rose Best, und sie bekamen zwei Kinder. In den frühen 1930er Jahren entschied sich Adams endgültig für die Fotografie als Beruf. Reisen nach New Mexico inspirierten ihn, und er veröffentlichte 1930 das Buch "Taos Pueblo". Die Begegnung mit Paul Strand bestärkte ihn in seinem Entschluss. Adams eröffnete ein Studio und arbeitete als kommerzieller Fotograf, während er gleichzeitig seine künstlerische Vision verfolgte. Er war Mitbegründer der Gruppe f/64, die sich der "straight photography" verschrieben hatte. Ansel Adams starb 1984 im Alter von 82 Jahren.
