The first commercial electric power plant, installed by Thomas Edison in the factory of Hinds, Ketcham and Co. 104 Fulton St., New York City in December 1880, for illumination of the plant. It consisted of a 10 hp engine (left) that turned an Edison "type Z" dynamo (right) at 1700 RPM. The dynamo produced enough current to light 150 8 candlepower Edison carbon filament bulbs, about 150 amps, at 55 VDC. for a total power of about 8250 watts.
