José Ferrer war ein US-amerikanischer Schauspieler und Regisseur, der am 8. Januar 1912 geboren wurde und am 26. Januar 1992 verstarb. Seine Eltern, spanischer Herkunft, waren amerikanische Staatsbürger und lebten in Puerto Rico. Ursprünglich sollte Ferrer auf Wunsch seines Vaters Konzertpianist werden, doch er entschied sich für ein Studium der Architektur, Musik und Komposition an der Princeton University. Bevor José Ferrer zum Film kam, arbeitete er als Schauspieler und Regisseur am Theater. Sein Filmdebüt gab er 1948 an der Seite von Ingrid Bergman in "Johanna von Orleans", wofür er direkt für einen Oscar nominiert wurde. 1951 erhielt er dann den Oscar als bester Hauptdarsteller für seine Darstellung des Cyrano de Bergerac in "Der letzte Musketier", eine Rolle, die er bereits zuvor auf der Bühne und im Fernsehen verkörpert hatte. 1952 folgten drei Tony Awards für seine Regiearbeiten bei den Stücken "The Shrike", "Stalag 17" und "The Fourposter", sowie ein weiterer Tony Award für seine schauspielerische Leistung in "The Shrike". In den 1950er Jahren übernahm Ferrer auch Regiearbeiten und spielte oft selbst in seinen Filmen mit. Er war bekannt für seine Wandlungsfähigkeit und spielte im Laufe seiner Karriere verschiedenste Rollen, darunter auch Schurken und komplexe Charaktere. José Ferrer, der fließend Spanisch, Englisch, Französisch, Italienisch und Deutsch sprach, war viermal verheiratet, unter anderem mit Uta Hagen und Rosemary Clooney. Aus der Ehe mit Clooney gingen fünf Kinder hervor, darunter der Schauspieler Miguel Ferrer. José Ferrer starb 1992 in Florida an Darmkrebs und wurde in seiner Heimat Puerto Rico beigesetzt.
