Charlie Parker war ein US-amerikanischer Musiker, der am 29. August 1920 geboren wurde und am 12. März 1955 verstarb. Er war eine Schlüsselfigur des Bebop und beeinflusste den Jazz nachhaltig. Seine Musik wird oft mit der von Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane und Miles Davis verglichen. Parker begann erst nach der High School mit dem Altsaxophonspielen, obwohl er schon früher ein Instrument von seiner Mutter bekommen hatte. Er spielte zunächst Tenorhorn in der Schulband. Schon bald trat er professionell mit verschiedenen Bands auf und lernte dabei den Bassisten Gene Ramey kennen. Ein prägendes Erlebnis war eine Jam-Session, bei der er so schlecht spielte, dass ein Schlagzeuger sein Becken vor Wut auf den Boden warf. Danach nahm er Unterricht in Harmonielehre und entwickelte sich schnell zu einem herausragenden Musiker. Ab 1942 wirkte Parker an Jamsessions in Harlem mit, wo er zusammen mit Dizzy Gillespie und Thelonious Monk den Modern Jazz entwickelte. Er spielte kühne Dissonanzen und rhythmische Verschiebungen. Nach Stationen in verschiedenen Bands gründete Parker 1945 mit Gillespie die erste Bebop-Combo. Ihr Stil wurde anfangs kritisiert, setzte sich aber durch. Nach der Auflösung der Band durch Gillespie blieb Parker in Kalifornien, gründete eine eigene Band und unterschrieb einen Plattenvertrag. Nach einem Nervenzusammenbruch kehrte er nach New York zurück und gründete ein neues Quintett. In den späten 1940er Jahren nahm Parker mit Streichern auf, was kommerziell erfolgreich war, aber auch Kritik hervorrief. Er tourte auch durch die Südstaaten, wo seine Band aufgrund der Rassentrennung Schwierigkeiten hatte. Parkers Heroinsucht beeinflusste sein Leben und seine Karriere stark. Er starb 1955 in New York City an den Folgen seiner Sucht und anderer Gesundheitsprobleme.

Description: 2019.10.1a: The saxophone body is made of brass and has a sterling silver bell. Some of the keys have mother-of-pearl inlays. The bell is decorated with an engraved floral design with text on the front. The text reads [KING / Super / 20 / THE H.N. WHITE CO. /CLEVELAND – O]. Engraved above the bell lug at the bow of the saxophone is [STERLING / BELL]. Engraved in cursive text below this on the bell lug is [Charlie Parker]. Engraved on the back of the body at the bow, below the key guard is [295173].
