Ada Lovelace war eine britische Mathematikerin und Gesellschaftsdame, die am 10. Dezember 1815 in London geboren wurde und am 27. November 1852 ebenda verstarb. Sie war die Tochter des berühmten Dichters Lord Byron. Lovelace arbeitete mit Charles Babbage an seiner Analytical Engine, einer frühen mechanischen Rechenmaschine. Obwohl die Maschine nie fertiggestellt wurde, erkannte Lovelace ihr Potenzial weit über Babbages ursprüngliche Vorstellung hinaus. Sie sah, dass die Maschine mehr konnte, als nur mathematische Tabellen zu berechnen. Ihre Notizen zu einer Übersetzung eines Artikels über die Analytical Engine waren doppelt so lang wie der Originaltext und enthielten ein konkretes Programm zur Berechnung von Bernoulli-Zahlen. Manche Historiker sehen Lovelace deshalb als die erste Programmiererin der Welt. Diese Ansicht ist jedoch umstritten, da Babbage selbst bereits früher Programmbeispiele in seinen Aufzeichnungen hatte. Ungeachtet dessen wird Lovelace für ihre visionäre Erkenntnis der weitreichenden Bedeutung von Computern gewürdigt. Sie erkannte, dass Computer nicht nur für Berechnungen, sondern auch für die Verarbeitung von Symbolen und sogar für die Komposition von Musik eingesetzt werden könnten. Lovelace erkannte auch die Trennung von Hardware und Software. Lovelace starb im Alter von 36 Jahren an Krebs. Ihr Leben und Werk inspirierten die Benennung der Programmiersprache Ada, der Lovelace Medal, des Ada Lovelace Award und der Kryptowährung ADA.
