Robert McNamara war ein US-amerikanischer Manager und Politiker, der am 9. Juni 1916 in San Francisco, Kalifornien geboren wurde und am 6. Juli 2009 in Washington, D.C. verstarb. Er stammte aus einfachen Verhältnissen und studierte Wirtschaft sowie Philosophie an der University of California, Berkeley, nachdem ihm die finanziellen Mittel für ein Studium an der Stanford University fehlten. Seinen MBA machte er an der Harvard University. Nach dem Studium arbeitete er kurz bei Price Waterhouse, bevor er als Dozent nach Harvard zurückkehrte und Kontakte zum US Army Air Corps knüpfte. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg diente er in der USAAF, wo er mathematische Modelle für Bombardierungen entwickelte und bis zum Lieutenant Colonel aufstieg. Nach dem Krieg begann er seine Karriere bei der Ford Motor Company, wo er schnell aufstieg und 1960 als erster Nicht-Ford zum Präsidenten des Unternehmens wurde. 1961 wurde McNamara Verteidigungsminister unter Präsident Kennedy und später unter Präsident Johnson. In dieser Funktion war er maßgeblich an der Eskalation des Vietnamkriegs beteiligt. Er setzte auf eine Strategie des Abnutzungskriegs, die auf der Statistik der getöteten Gegner basierte, was ihm den Spitznamen "Computer auf Beinen" einbrachte. Später distanzierte er sich vom Krieg und trat 1968 zurück. Nach seinem Rücktritt wurde er Präsident der Weltbank, wo er sich bis 1981 für die Bekämpfung der Armut in der Dritten Welt einsetzte. McNamara änderte im Laufe der Zeit seine Ansichten und setzte sich für atomare Abrüstung ein. Er bezeichnete den Vietnamkrieg als Fehler und kritisierte den Irakkrieg. Er war zweimal verheiratet und hatte drei Kinder. Sein Leben wurde 2003 in dem Dokumentarfilm "The Fog of War" thematisiert.
