Norman Mailer war ein US-amerikanischer Schriftsteller und Regisseur, der am 31. Januar 1923 geboren wurde und am 10. November 2007 verstarb. Mailer stammte aus einer jüdischen Familie; seine Mutter war eine prägende Figur, während sein Vater aus einer Familie von Geschäftsleuten kam. Seine Kindheit verbrachte er teilweise in Brooklyn, wo er durch seine schulischen Leistungen auffiel.
Mit 16 Jahren begann Mailer ein Studium des Flugingenieurwesens in Harvard, wo er durch seinen Kleidungsstil und sein Interesse an Literatur auffiel. Er setzte sich das Ziel, täglich 3000 Wörter zu schreiben, um seine Schreibfähigkeiten zu verbessern. Nach seinem Ingenieurabschluss 1943 heiratete er und wurde 1944 zur US Army eingezogen, wo er im Pazifikkrieg diente.
Seine Kriegserlebnisse verarbeitete Mailer in seinem Roman "Die Nackten und die Toten", der ihn 1948 berühmt machte. Er gründete 1955 mit anderen die New Yorker Wochenzeitung The Village Voice. 1960 verletzte er seine zweite Frau mit einem Messer, was zu seiner Inhaftierung führte. Mailer war politisch links orientiert und kritisierte die US-amerikanische Gesellschaft. Für seine Reportage über die Protestbewegung gegen den Vietnamkrieg, "Heere aus der Nacht", erhielt er 1969 den Pulitzer-Preis.
Mailer setzte sich für den Kriminellen Jack Henry Abbott ein, der nach seiner Entlassung einen Mord beging. Er kommentierte den Boxkampf "Rumble in the Jungle" und schrieb darüber das Buch "The Fight". Mailer veröffentlichte auch eine Biografie über Marilyn Monroe und einen Roman über Adolf Hitler. Norman Mailer kandidierte erfolglos für das Bürgermeisteramt von New York.
Gegen Ende seines Lebens solidarisierte sich Mailer mit Günter Grass und übergab sein Archiv an die University of Texas. Er starb 2007 im Alter von 84 Jahren an Nierenversagen.
