Kid Rock ist ein US-amerikanischer Musiker, der am 17. Januar 1971 in Romeo, Michigan, geboren wurde und Southern Rock mit Hip-Hop-Elementen verbindet. Robert James Ritchie, wie er bürgerlich heißt, wuchs in der Nähe von Detroit auf und kam früh mit Hip-Hop in Berührung, wobei ihn besonders die Beastie Boys inspirierten. Schon 1988 nahm Ritchie erste Demos auf und trat als Vorband für Boogie Down Productions auf. Dies führte zu einem Vertrag mit Jive Records, die sein Debütalbum "Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast" veröffentlichten. Nach einer Tour mit Too Short und Ice Cube wurde der Vertrag jedoch wieder aufgelöst. Es folgte ein Umzug nach Brooklyn und ein neuer Vertrag mit Continuum Records, wo 1993 das rockigere Album "The Polyfuze Method" erschien. 1994 veröffentlichte er die EP "Fire It Up" auf seinem eigenen Label. 1996 kehrte Kid Rock nach Detroit zurück und veröffentlichte das Album "Early Mornin’ Stoned Pimp". Zu dieser Zeit entstand auch seine Begleitband Twisted Brown Trucker. Angesichts des aufkommenden Nu-Metal bot Atlantic Records ihm einen Vertrag an, woraufhin 1998 das Album "Devil Without a Cause" erschien. Zunächst wenig beachtet, wurde die Single "Bawitdaba" dank einer Werbekampagne und MTV ein Erfolg. Das Album erreichte hohe Chartplatzierungen und wurde mehrfach mit Platin ausgezeichnet. 1999 trat Rock beim Woodstock III auf. Im Jahr 2000 folgte das Album "The History of Rock", das alte und neue Stücke enthielt. "Devil Without a Cause" verkaufte sich allein in den USA über elf Millionen Mal. Mit dem Duett "Picture" mit Sheryl Crow gelang Kid Rock 2002 auch ein Erfolg im Country-Bereich. In Europa wurde er vor allem durch seine kurze Ehe mit Pamela Anderson bekannt. Rock hatte auch Gastauftritte in Fernsehserien und spielte in Filmen mit. Einen besonderen Erfolg feierte Kid Rock 2008 mit dem Song "All Summer Long", der in vielen Ländern die Charts anführte. Später wandte er sich mit dem Album "Born Free" verstärkt der Country-Musik zu.
