Konitz gehörte seit den 1940er Jahren neben Charlie Parker zu einem der wichtigsten und einflussreichsten Altsaxophonisten. Mit Miles Davis und Gil Evans brachte er 1950 das berühmte Cool-Jazz-Album "Birth of the Cool" heraus, bevor er sich später dem Modern Jazz zuwandte. Während seiner Karriere nahm Konitz mehr als 150 Alben auf und war lange Zeit auch als Musiklehrer tätig. 2009 wurde er mit dem wichtigsten Jazzpreis ausgezeichnet, dem NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship.
