George Armstrong Custer war ein US-amerikanischer Oberstleutnant des US-Heeres, der am 5. Dezember 1839 geboren wurde und am 25. Juni 1876 verstarb. Seine väterlichen Vorfahren stammten aus Hessen. Er verbrachte eine lebhafte, aber schulisch faule Kindheit und trat 1857 in West Point ein, wo er 1861 als Letzter seines Jahrgangs graduierte. Unmittelbar danach wurde er der Potomac-Armee zugeteilt und stieg schnell zum Hauptmann und Adjutanten auf, wobei er sich vielfach auszeichnete. Im Sezessionskrieg befehligte Custer die Michigan-Kavalleriebrigade und wurde zum Brigadegeneral der Freiwilligen befördert. Er führte entscheidende Angriffe in Schlachten wie Brandy Station und Gettysburg. Später kommandierte Custer die 3. Kavalleriedivision und trug maßgeblich zu Union-Siegen bei, darunter Cedar Creek und Waynesboro, was ihn mit 25 Jahren zum jüngsten Generalmajor der Freiwilligen machte. Nach dem Bürgerkrieg wurde Custer Oberstleutnant im US-Heer, erlitt jedoch eine einjährige Suspendierung wegen Disziplinlosigkeit. 1868 rehabilitierte sich Custer, indem er ein Cheyenne-Dorf am Washita angriff, eine umstrittene Aktion, bei der viele Nichtkombattanten starben und über 1.000 Pferde getötet wurden. 1874 führte er eine Expedition in die Black Hills, wo Gold entdeckt wurde, was einen Goldrausch auslöste. 1876 wurde Custer für den Feldzug gegen die Sioux und Cheyenne unter General Terry eingesetzt. Er ignorierte Warnungen und griff am 25. Juni 1876 ein großes Indianerlager am Little Bighorn an. Sein geteiltes Regiment war waffentechnisch unterlegen und wurde vollständig auf einem Hügel vernichtet, wobei Custer und seine Brüder fielen.
