Edward Albee war ein US-amerikanischer Schriftsteller, der am 12. März 1928 geboren wurde und am 16. September 2016 verstarb. Albee wuchs in der Welt des Theaters auf, da seine Adoptiveltern im Vaudeville-Geschäft tätig waren. Seine frühe Faszination für die Bühne wurde von seinem Vater unterstützt, der am Keith-Albee-Theatre-Circuit beteiligt war. Bereits als Zwölfjähriger schrieb er sein erstes Bühnenwerk. Albee bedauerte später, dass er nie Klavierspielen gelernt hatte und hegte in seiner Jugend den Wunsch, Komponist zu werden. Stattdessen verfasste er zahlreiche Gedichte, Kurzgeschichten und einen Roman. Mit 20 Jahren zog er nach New York City und schlug sich mit Gelegenheitsjobs durch, während er gleichzeitig von einem Legat seiner Großmutter unterstützt wurde. Er arbeitete unter anderem für den Sender WNYC, wo er das Musikprogramm gestaltete. Der Rat von Thornton Wilder, für das Theater zu schreiben, sollte Albees Karriere entscheidend prägen. Sein erstes Stück, "Die Zoogeschichte", wurde zunächst in den USA abgelehnt, feierte aber 1959 in Berlin seine Uraufführung und wurde ein großer Erfolg. Dieser Erfolg ebnete Albee den Weg für Aufführungen in New York. Mit "Wer hat Angst vor Virginia Woolf?" gelang Albee der Durchbruch am Broadway und das Stück wurde zu seinem bekanntesten Werk. Albee erhielt im Laufe seines Lebens zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, darunter den Pulitzer-Preis und den Tony Award. Albee lebte ab 1971 mit seinem Partner Jonathan Thomas zusammen, bis dieser 2005 verstarb.
50 West 10th Street between Fifth and Sixth Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, was built between 1863 and 1869 as a stable in the Romanesque Revival style. It was altered in 1887.

The SoHo Playhouse in the Huron Club Building at 15 Vandam Street between Sixth Avenue and Varick Street in the South Village section of the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, was a meeting place and club for the Democratic Party, including, at the turn of the 19th Century, Tammany Hall. It was converted into a theatre in the 1920s, and in the 1960s was known as the "Village South", which was home to Edward Albee's Playwrights Unit Workshop. Today the building includes a 199-seat off-Broadway theatre, the SoHo Playhouse, and a 55-seat bar and cabaret space called the "Huron Club".
