Édouard Manet war Vater eines Kindes namens Léon Leenhoff (* 1852).
Édouard Manet war ein französischer Maler, der am 23. Januar 1832 in Paris geboren wurde und am 30. April 1883 ebenda verstarb. Manet kam in einer bürgerlichen Familie zur Welt, sein Vater war Richter und seine Mutter die Tochter eines Diplomaten. Seine Kindheit verbrachte er teilweise auf dem Landgut seiner Familie in Gennevilliers. Von 1838 bis 1848 besuchte Édouard Manet verschiedene Schulen in Paris. Dort freundete er sich mit Antonin Proust an und fiel vor allem durch seine Karikaturen auf. Sein Onkel erkannte sein Talent und ermöglichte ihm zusätzlichen Zeichenunterricht. Nach dem Schulabschluss wollte Manet Marineoffizier werden, scheiterte aber zweimal an der Aufnahmeprüfung. Stattdessen reiste er nach Brasilien, wo er die Sklaverei kritisierte und die Schönheit des Landes schilderte. Nach seiner Rückkehr begann Manet eine Ausbildung im Atelier von Thomas Couture. Dort lernte er die Arbeit mit Modellen, kritisierte aber bald die unnatürlichen Posen und Lehrmethoden. Édouard Manet besuchte zusätzlich die Académie Suisse und kopierte Werke im Louvre. Reisen führten ihn in verschiedene europäische Städte, wo er die Werke alter Meister studierte. 1856 verließ Manet das Atelier von Couture und bezog ein eigenes Atelier mit Albert de Balleroy. In den späten 1850er Jahren freundete sich Manet mit Edgar Degas, Henri Fantin-Latour und Charles Baudelaire an. Baudelaire inspirierte ihn zu seinem ersten eigenständigen Gemälde "Der Absinthtrinker". 1859 reichte Manet dieses Werk beim Salon de Paris ein, wurde aber abgelehnt. 1861 wurden zwei seiner Gemälde akzeptiert, darunter "Guitarrero", das ihm erste Anerkennung brachte. In den 1860er Jahren wandte sich Édouard Manet spanischen Motiven zu und malte unter anderem "Lola de Valence". Manets Werke stießen im Salon de Paris oft auf Ablehnung, wie "Das Frühstück im Grünen" und "Olympia". Trotzdem hatte er großen Einfluss auf junge Künstler, die sich später als Impressionisten abspalteten. Édouard Manet selbst sah sich jedoch nie als Teil dieser Bewegung. 1882 wurde er im Salon ausgezeichnet und zum Ritter der Ehrenlegion ernannt. Manet starb 1883 in Paris an den Folgen von Syphilis.

Carnet de notes du peintre français douard Manet avec une mention sur le modèle Laure, la servante noire représentée sur le tableau Olympia. Ce carnet détenu par la Morgan Libary and museum de New York indique le nom et l'adresse de la modèle (11 rue de Vintimille), restés inconnus jusqu'en 2018. Le carnet est montré à l'exposition temporaire "Le Modèle noir" au Musée d'Orsay en 2019.
