Toni Morrison war eine US-amerikanische Schriftstellerin, die am 18. Februar 1931 geboren wurde und am 5. August 2019 verstarb. Morrison kam in Lorain, Ohio, als Chloe Ardelia Wofford zur Welt und wuchs in einer afroamerikanischen Arbeiterfamilie auf. Ihre Eltern legten großen Wert auf mündliche Überlieferung und Sprache, indem sie ihr Geschichten erzählten und Lieder vorsangen. Schon früh zeigte Morrison eine Begeisterung für das Lesen und entdeckte ihre Liebe zur Literatur. Nach dem Besuch der High School begann sie ein Anglistikstudium an der Howard University, wo sie ihren Vornamen in Toni änderte. Ihren Master machte sie an der Cornell University. Nach dem Studium arbeitete sie als Dozentin an verschiedenen Universitäten. Nach ihrer Scheidung im Jahr 1964 begann Morrison als Lektorin für Random House zu arbeiten und spielte eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Förderung afroamerikanischer Literatur. Ihr erster Roman, "The Bluest Eye", erschien 1970. Es folgten weitere Romane wie "Sula" und "Song of Solomon", die ihr Anerkennung einbrachten. Morrison erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, darunter den Pulitzer-Preis für "Beloved" und 1993 den Literaturnobelpreis als erste schwarze Frau. Neben Romanen verfasste sie auch Kurzgeschichten, ein Theaterstück, Kinderbücher mit ihrem Sohn Slade und diverse Essays. 2021 wurde vom amerikanischen National Book Critics Circle der Toni Morrison Achievement Award ins Leben gerufen.
