Telly Savalas war ein amerikanischer Schauspieler, der am 21. Januar 1922 in Garden City, New York geboren wurde und am 22. Januar 1994 verstarb. Er stammte aus einer griechischen Familie und wurde vor allem durch seine Rolle als Lieutenant Kojak in der Fernsehserie "Kojak – Einsatz in Manhattan" bekannt. Bevor er zum Fernsehen kam, wirkte Savalas in einigen Kriegsfilmen mit und verkörperte 1969 den Bösewicht Blofeld in einem James-Bond-Film. Savalas unterbrach sein Psychologiestudium, um im Zweiten Weltkrieg als Soldat zu dienen. Nach dem Krieg arbeitete er bei ABC Radio und produzierte dort die Talkshow "Telly’s Coffee House". In den 1950er Jahren begann er, seine Haare abzurasieren, was zusammen mit dem Lolli, den er oft als Kojak im Mund hatte, zu seinem Markenzeichen wurde. Savalas war auch ein begeisterter Pokerspieler und erreichte 1992 einen beachtlichen Platz bei der World Series of Poker. Seine Karriere als Schauspieler begann 1959 im Fernsehen. In den frühen 1960er-Jahren konnte er sich auch im Film etablieren. Für seine Rolle in "Der Gefangene von Alcatraz" wurde Savalas für einen Oscar nominiert. Er spielte auch in Filmen wie "Die größte Geschichte aller Zeiten" und "Das dreckige Dutzend" mit. Seinen Durchbruch hatte Savalas mit der Fernsehserie "Kojak", die ihn zu einem bekannten Schauspieler machte. In Deutschland wurde er durch die Serie ebenfalls populär, und sein Ausruf "Entzückend, Baby!" wurde oft zitiert. Savalas kehrte 1989 in sechs Fernsehfilmen als Kojak zurück, verzichtete aber auf den Lolli. Er war auch als Sänger erfolgreich und hatte mit "If" und "Some Broken Hearts Never Mend" Hits in Europa. Telly Savalas starb 1994 an den Folgen von Krebs.
