Robert FitzRoy war ein britischer Marineoffizier, der am 5. Juli 1805 in Ampton Hall geboren wurde und am 30. April 1865 verstarb. FitzRoy stammte aus einer adligen Familie und verbrachte seine Kindheit in Northamptonshire. Er heiratete zweimal und hatte Kinder aus beiden Ehen. Seine Karriere in der Royal Navy begann früh. Er besuchte die Royal Naval Academy und trat 1820 der Marine bei. FitzRoy zeichnete sich aus und schloss seine Ausbildung als Bester seines Jahrgangs ab. Er diente auf verschiedenen Schiffen, bevor er 1828 nach Südamerika beordert wurde. Dort wurde er zum stellvertretenden Kapitän der HMS Beagle ernannt, nachdem der vorherige Kapitän Suizid begangen hatte. FitzRoy brachte das Schiff sicher zurück nach England und nahm auf dieser Reise auch vier Feuerländer mit nach England, um sie zu bekehren. Später erhielt FitzRoy erneut das Kommando über die HMS Beagle und stach 1831 zu einer weiteren Expedition nach Südamerika in See. An Bord war auch Charles Darwin, dessen Erkenntnisse auf dieser Reise zur Entwicklung seiner Evolutionstheorie führten. Obwohl FitzRoy und Darwin die Reise gemeinsam verbrachten, lehnte FitzRoy Darwins Theorien später öffentlich ab. Nach seiner Zeit als Kapitän der Beagle war FitzRoy von 1843 bis 1845 Gouverneur von Neuseeland. Nach seinem Rückzug aus dem aktiven Marinedienst widmete sich FitzRoy seinen wissenschaftlichen Interessen. Er wurde zum Meteorologischen Statistiker ernannt und leistete Pionierarbeit im Bereich der Wettervorhersage. FitzRoy führte das Barometer auf britischen Schiffen ein und gab Sturmwarnungen heraus. Trotz seiner Verdienste wurde er für seine oft falschen Vorhersagen verspottet. Für seine wissenschaftlichen Leistungen wurde FitzRoy geehrt und erhielt unter anderem die Goldmedaille der Royal Geographical Society. Der depressive Robert FitzRoy nahm sich im Alter von knapp 60 Jahren das Leben.
