Philip Roth war ein amerikanischer Schriftsteller, der am 19. März 1933 in Newark, New Jersey, geboren wurde und am 22. Mai 2018 in New York City verstarb. Seine Werke, darunter Romane, Erzählungen und Essays, wurden oft ausgezeichnet und etablierten ihn als einen wichtigen zeitgenössischen Romancier.
Roth wuchs in Newark in einer jüdischen Familie auf, was seine Werke oft widerspiegelten. Er studierte an der Rutgers University und später an der Bucknell University, wo er sich von seinem Elternhaus emanzipierte und eine Literaturzeitschrift gründete. Nach seinem Master-Abschluss an der Universität von Chicago und einer kurzen Zeit in der Armee kehrte er dorthin zurück, um Schreibkurse zu geben. Seine ersten Veröffentlichungen waren Kurzgeschichten, die in renommierten Zeitschriften erschienen. Der Kurzroman "Goodbye, Columbus" brachte ihm Kritikerlob und den National Book Award ein, löste aber auch Kontroversen aus, besonders in Bezug auf seine Darstellung jüdischer Charaktere.
In seinem Privatleben heiratete Roth 1959 Margaret Martinson Williams, doch die Ehe scheiterte und endete mit ihrem Tod bei einem Autounfall. Nach einer fünfjährigen Psychoanalyse und einer ersten Reise nach Israel lehrte Roth Komparatistik an der University of Pennsylvania. Sein Roman "Portnoy’s Complaint" aus dem Jahr 1969 machte ihn berühmt, sorgte aber auch für Kontroversen wegen seiner Darstellung von Sexualität und jüdischen Charakteren. Roth zog sich daraufhin ins ländliche Connecticut zurück und setzte sich in seinen Werken zunehmend mit politischen Themen auseinander. Er lebte zeitweise in London mit der Schauspielerin Claire Bloom zusammen, die er später heiratete und wieder schied. Roth schuf die Figur Nathan Zuckerman, ein Alter Ego, das in vielen seiner Werke auftauchte. In seinen späteren Jahren befasste sich Roth mit Themen wie Alter, Vergänglichkeit und dem amerikanischen Selbstverständnis. Im Jahr 2012 erklärte Philip Roth, dass "Nemesis" sein letztes Buch sein würde.
