Pickford zählte zu den beliebtesten Schauspielerinnen Hollywoods in der Stummfilmära und erhielt ihre Bezeichnung als „America’s Sweetheart“ durch zahlreiche Auftritte in Kinder- und Jugendrollen. Hinter der Kamera übte sie als Produzentin maßgeblichen Einfluss auf ihre Filme aus, war zudem die einzige weibliche Mitbegründerin des unabhängigen Filmvertriebes United Artists und gehörte zu den 36 Gründungsmitgliedern der Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, die die Oscars vergibt.

Stock Certificate of the United Artists Studio Corporation for 999 shares at $100 each, issued on 4 September 1929 to Mary Pickford Faribanks and signed on the reverse in the original by her (lower image). Signed on the front in the original by Robert Fairbanks as President and by Edwin J. Loeb as Secretary. Robert Fairbanks was brother of Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. husband of Mary Pickford. In 1927, lawyer Edwin J. Loeb was one of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), today best known for its annual Academy Awards. On March 2, 1928, 1998 common shares of $100 each United Artists Studio Corporation were issued to Pickford-Faribanks Studios Company, attested in Stock Certificate No. 9. United Artists Studio Corporation was formed as a joint venture on February 5, 1919. The four founders, David Wark Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks each held 20% common shares of the company, with the remaining 20% held by former Secretary of the Treasury William Gibbs McAdoo, a son-in-law of President Woodrow Wilson. Stock Certificate No. 21 presented here transferred 999 shares in United Artists Studio Corporation, evidenced by Stock No. 9, to Mary Pickford Faribanks. United Artists Studio was the first major film production company controlled by its artists and not by businessmen.
