John Franklin war ein britischer Konteradmiral, Polarforscher und Lieutenant governor, der am 16. April 1786 geboren wurde und am 11. Juni 1847 verstarb. Franklin kam in Spilsby, Lincolnshire als neuntes von zwölf Kindern zur Welt. Eine seiner Schwestern war die Mutter von Emily Tennyson, der Frau des Dichters Alfred Tennyson. Schon als Jugendlicher hegte Franklin den Wunsch, zur See zu fahren. So nahm er 1801 an der Schlacht von Kopenhagen teil und diente 1805 in der Schlacht von Trafalgar an Bord der HMS Bellerophon. Zwischen 1801 und 1803 umsegelte er mit seinem Onkel Matthew Flinders Australien. 1814 kämpfte Franklin in der Schlacht von New Orleans. Seine erste Polarexpedition erlebte er 1818 unter der Leitung von David Buchan, was seine Faszination für diese Region weckte. Eine Expedition von der Hudson Bay zur Mündung des Coppermine River und zur Kent-Halbinsel wurde für Franklin und seine Mannschaft zum Überlebenskampf. Sie mussten Flechten und Leder essen, was Franklin den Spitznamen "der Mann, der seine Schuhe aß" einbrachte. Er verlor neun seiner 19 Begleiter. Nach seiner Rückkehr heiratete er 1823 Eleanor Anne Porden und veröffentlichte einen Bericht über die Reise, der ihn bekannt machte. Nach dem Tod seiner Frau im Jahr 1825 brach Franklin zu einer weiteren Expedition auf, die bis 1827 dauerte. Er erforschte die Küste zwischen den Mündungen von Mackenzie River und Coppermine River und später die Küste westlich der Mackenzie-Mündung. 1828 heiratete Franklin Jane Griffin und wurde 1829 in den Adelsstand erhoben. 1836 wurde Franklin zum Lieutenant governor von Van-Diemens-Land ernannt. Dort gründete er eine Messstation für Erdmagnetismus und förderte das kulturelle Leben. Seine weltoffene Haltung führte jedoch zu Konflikten, die 1843 zu seiner Abberufung führten. 1845 startete Franklin im Alter von fast 60 Jahren zu einer letzten Expedition zur Suche nach der Nordwestpassage, von der niemand zurückkehrte. Franklin starb 1847 während dieser Expedition, als seine Schiffe im Eis festsaßen.

Sir John Franklin, Captain, HMS Erebus. One of a set of 14 daguerreotypes of the officers of the Franklin expedition, 1845, from the studio of Richard Beard.
Offered for sale by Sotheby's in August 2023, when the set was described as "14 sixth-plate daguerreotypes (70 x 83mm.), each hand-tinted with shell gold applied to the buttons, hat bands and epaulettes of the officers' jackets, all but one sealed, each inscribed on the verso (in ink or etched with a stylus, denoting name and sometimes rank of sitter, name of ship on which they served, and date), housed in a contemporary partitioned, book-form morocco case (203 x 339 x 22mm.), the daguerreotypes presented in four rows, blind-tooling around edges of lid and tray and to outer edges and inner faces of side walls, inner surface of compartments lined with glazed burgundy cloth, accompanied by a manuscript list of officers in ink on laid paper

Poplar: The former Sir John Franklin public house The pub dates from 1963 when it was built by Watney-Mann brewers at 269 East India Dock Road, E14. Despite the generally derelict and boarded up nature of the building, an original Manns brewery sign is still present. Looking at its geographical situation, bounded on the east side by the maze of roads associated with the Blackwall Tunnel, and on the south by the busy East India Dock Road, it is easy to understand how it did not attract enough custom to justify its existence.

Sir John Franklin KCH FRGS (16 April 1786 – 11 June 1847) was a British Royal Navy officer and explorer of the Arctic. Franklin also served as Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land from 1837 to 1843. He disappeared while on his last expedition, attempting to chart and navigate the Northwest Passage in the North American Arctic.
