James Finlayson war ein britischer Filmschauspieler und Komödiant, der am 27. August 1887 in Larbert bei Falkirk, Schottland geboren wurde und am 9. Oktober 1953 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien verstarb. Bekannt wurde er vor allem durch seine Rolle als Gegenspieler von Laurel und Hardy, wobei er in über 190 Filmproduktionen mitwirkte. Finlayson, dessen Vater als Eisengießer arbeitete, begann zunächst ein Wirtschaftsstudium. Durch seine Freundschaft mit dem Schauspieler John Clyde wandte er sich jedoch der Schauspielerei zu. Er tourte als Charakterdarsteller und Komiker durch Großbritannien und trat in Music Halls auf. Mit dem Bühnenstück "Bunty Pulls the Strings" reiste er nach Amerika, wo er 1912 am Broadway seinen Durchbruch feierte. Danach war er als Vaudeville-Schauspieler in den Vereinigten Staaten gefragt. Ab 1916 begann Finlayson seine Filmkarriere in Hollywood. Zunächst hatte er kleinere Rollen in Komödien von Henry Lehrman. 1919 unterschrieb er einen Vertrag mit Mack Sennett. Ab 1922 arbeitete Finlayson für Hal Roach, wo er zunächst in Kurzfilmen mit Snub Pollard und Stan Laurel zu sehen war. Später bildete Roach kurzzeitig ein Trio aus Finlayson, Laurel und Oliver Hardy, woraus dann die bekannten Laurel-&-Hardy-Komödien entstanden, in denen Finlayson als Nebendarsteller mitwirkte. Markant waren sein falscher Bart, seine Wutausbrüche und sein intensives Grimassenspiel. Bis 1940 spielte Finlayson in über 30 Laurel-&-Hardy-Filmen mit, arbeitete aber auch für andere Studios. In den 1930er Jahren war er kurzzeitig beim europäischen Film tätig. Seine letzte Filmrolle hatte er 1951. Finlayson starb im Alter von 66 Jahren an einem Herzinfarkt.
