Jacques Cousteau war ein französischer Pionier der Meeresforschung, der am 11. Juni 1910 geboren wurde und am 25. Juni 1997 verstarb. Er wurde durch seine Filme bekannt, in denen er oft mit einer roten Wollmütze zu sehen war. Schon früh begeisterte er sich für das Meer und die Fliegerei. Cousteau besuchte die Marineschule und trat der französischen Kriegsmarine bei, wo er bis 1956 diente. Ein Autounfall verhinderte seine Karriere als Pilot. Er heiratete Simone Melchior und bekam mit ihr zwei Söhne, Jean-Michel und Philippe. Philippe starb jedoch bei einem Flugunfall. Nach Simones Tod heiratete Cousteau Francine Triplet, mit der er bereits zwei Kinder hatte. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg war er Mitglied der Résistance und erhielt die Ehrenlegion. Schon vor dem Krieg interessierte sich Cousteau für die Unterwasserwelt und entwickelte technische Geräte weiter. Er nutzte Flossen und Unterwasserkameras und entwickelte ein wasserdichtes Gehäuse für seine Filmkamera. Gemeinsam mit Émile Gagnan verbesserte er den Atemregler zur Aqualunge, den sie erfolgreich vermarkteten. Für die Marine entwickelte er einen motorisierten Scooter. Er forschte mit U-Booten und entwickelte Kameras für die Unterwasserfotografie. Die irische Guinness-Brauerei schenkte Cousteau ein Minensuchboot namens Calypso, das er zu einem Forschungsschiff umbaute. Cousteau unternahm mit der Calypso Expeditionen zur Erforschung der Meere. Er war Präsident der französischen ozeanografischen Gesellschaft und Leiter des ozeanographischen Instituts von Monaco. In den 1980er Jahren ließ Cousteau die Alcyone bauen, ein Schiff mit Flettner-Rotoren zur Unterstützung des Antriebs. Die Calypso sank 1996 vor Singapur und wurde später zur Restaurierung nach Europa gebracht. Cousteau drehte über 100 Filme und schrieb mehrere Bücher. Er gründete die Cousteau-Gesellschaft zum Schutz der Meere.

Calypso used satellite observation information to navigate into safe waters after getting hit by an iceberg. Cousteau was born in Saint-Andre-de-Cubzac, France on June 11, 1910. He died on June 25, 1997, after contributing various books and hundreds of documents on the chartless realms that make up the planet's oceans. In 1956, with the help of Calypso and her crew, Cousteau received an Academy award for his undersea documentary, The Silent World, and cemented his position as one of the world's most famous marine biologists.
