Dale Mortensen war ein US-amerikanischer Wirtschaftswissenschaftler, der am 2. Februar 1939 in Enterprise, Oregon geboren wurde und am 9. Januar 2014 in Wilmette, Illinois verstarb. Er erlangte 2010 internationale Bekanntheit, als er den Alfred-Nobel-Gedächtnispreis für Wirtschaftswissenschaften erhielt. Mortensen schloss sein Studium an der Willamette University 1961 mit einem Bachelor in Wirtschaftswissenschaften ab. Seine akademische Laufbahn setzte er an der Carnegie Mellon University fort, wo er 1967 promovierte. Bereits 1965 begann er seine Tätigkeit an der Northwestern University, zunächst als Assistenzprofessor, später als außerordentlicher Professor, bevor er 1975 zum ordentlichen Professor für Wirtschaftswissenschaften ernannt wurde. Von 1979 bis 1982 übernahm er die Rolle des Dekans der wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fakultät. Ab 1980 lehrte Mortensen zusätzlich als Professor für Betriebswirtschaftslehre und Entscheidungstheorie. Neben seiner Lehrtätigkeit an der Northwestern University engagierte sich Mortensen in verschiedenen Forschungseinrichtungen. Im Jahr 2000 wurde er in die American Academy of Arts and Sciences aufgenommen. Ab 2001 forschte er am Institut zur Zukunft der Arbeit in Bonn und ab 2005 am National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Gastprofessuren führten ihn an renommierte Universitäten wie die Cornell University, New York University und die Hebräische Universität Jerusalem. Mortensen beschäftigte sich intensiv mit dynamischen Prozessen in der Wirtschaft und entwickelte in der Arbeitsökonomik formale Arbeitssuchmodelle. Seine Forschung trug maßgeblich zum Verständnis von Arbeitslosigkeit und der Dynamik von Löhnen bei. Für seine wegweisenden Beiträge zur Wirtschaftswissenschaft wurde Mortensen mehrfach ausgezeichnet. Er erhielt 2005 den IZA Prize in Labor Economics und 2007 den Mincer Prize. Zu seinen bedeutendsten Werken zählen das Buch "Wage Dispersion. Why Are Similar Workers Paid Differently" und zahlreiche Artikel, darunter "Job Search, the Duration of Unemployment, and the Phillips Curve". Dale Mortensen war Mitglied in verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen Vereinigungen, darunter die Econometric Society und die American Economic Association.
