Christiaan Barnard war ein südafrikanischer Herzchirurg, der am 8. November 1922 geboren wurde und am 2. September 2001 verstarb. Barnard wuchs in einem Pfarrhaus in Südafrika auf und hatte drei Brüder. Er heiratete 1948 Aletta Gertruida Louw, mit der er zwei Kinder hatte. Später folgten noch zwei weitere Ehen und Scheidungen. Barnard besuchte die Highschool in seinem Heimatort und studierte Medizin in Kapstadt und Minnesota. In den USA erhielt er seine chirurgische Ausbildung und lernte von Clarence Walton Lillehei die neuesten Techniken der Herztransplantation. 1958 brachte er eine Herz-Lungen-Maschine mit nach Südafrika. Er arbeitete in Kapstadt und wurde Direktor der "Medical School" und Professor für Thoraxchirurgie. Am 3. Dezember 1967 führte Barnard die weltweit erste Herztransplantation am Menschen durch. Der Patient, Louis Washkansky, überlebte die Operation 18 Tage. Ein weiteres Teammitglied war Hamilton Naki, dessen wichtige Beiträge aufgrund der Apartheid verschwiegen wurden. 1974 gelang Barnard der Nachweis, dass in der Brust des Menschen zwei Herzen schlagen können. Barnard wurde durch einen Fernsehauftritt und sein Privatleben zum Medienstar. Er schrieb eine Autobiografie mit dem Titel "Das zweite Leben", in der er diese Phase selbstkritisch reflektierte. 1983 musste er aufgrund von Arthritis das Operieren aufgeben. Er nahm eine wissenschaftliche Stellung in Oklahoma an. Seinen Lebensabend verbrachte er in Österreich und auf seiner Farm in Südafrika. Kurz vor seinem Tod erhielt er die österreichische Staatsbürgerschaft. Christiaan Barnard starb 2001 in Zypern an einem Atemstillstand.
