Andy Warhol war ein US-amerikanischer Künstler, der am 6. August 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania geboren wurde und am 22. Februar 1987 in Manhattan, New York City verstarb. Eigentlich hieß er Andrew Warhola. Er war eine Schlüsselfigur der Pop Art in den Vereinigten Staaten und arbeitete als Filmemacher und Verleger. In den 1950er Jahren begann Warhol seine Karriere als Grafiker und Illustrator für verschiedene Magazine. Warhol stammte aus einer armen Familie mit osteuropäischen Wurzeln. Seine Eltern waren Immigranten aus der heutigen Slowakei. Schon als Kind entwickelte er eine Leidenschaft für Comics und Filme, begann zu zeichnen und Papierfiguren zu basteln, während er wegen einer Krankheit längere Zeit im Bett liegen musste. Nach seinem Studium der Gebrauchsgrafik in Pittsburgh zog er nach New York, wo er zunächst mit Gelegenheitsarbeiten seinen Lebensunterhalt verdiente. In den frühen 1950er Jahren arbeitete Warhol als Werbegrafiker und entwickelte seine eigene Technik, die er "drop and dripping" nannte. Dabei wurden Motive mit Tinte gezeichnet, mit Löschpapier kopiert und auf ein neues Blatt übertragen. So entstanden vielfältige Arbeiten für Zeitschriften, Magazine und Werbegeschenke. In den 1960er Jahren wandte sich Warhol der Pop Art zu und begann, Motive aus der Popkultur wie Comicfiguren und Hollywoodstars in seinen Werken zu verwenden. Er experimentierte mit dem Siebdruck und schuf serielle Wiederholungen von bekannten Motiven. Seine erste Einzelausstellung als Künstler hatte er 1962 mit den "Campbell’s Soup Cans". Warhol gründete die "Factory", ein Atelier, das zum Treffpunkt der New Yorker Kunstszene wurde. Dort arbeitete er an verschiedenen Projekten, darunter Filme. Er drehte Undergroundfilme und arbeitete mit der Rockgruppe The Velvet Underground zusammen. Nach einem Attentat im Jahr 1968 zog sich Warhol etwas zurück und konzentrierte sich auf seine Arbeit als Filmproduzent. In den 1970er Jahren porträtierte er Prominente und drehte Filme, die an Pornografie grenzten. Warhol verstarb 1987 nach Komplikationen bei einer Gallenblasenoperation.

It extends through the block to 18th Street (#32-34). Originally called the Parish Building, it was later the Butler Building, and is located within the Ladies' Mile Historic District.
