Steve Fossett war ein amerikanischer Milliardär, Flugpionier, Regattasegler und Miteigentümer des Unternehmens Scaled Composites, der am 22. April 1944 geboren wurde und am 3. September 2007 verstarb. Er wuchs in Garden Grove, Kalifornien, auf und erwarb 1966 einen Bachelor in Wirtschaftswissenschaften an der Stanford University. Zwei Jahre später folgte ein MBA an der Olin School of Business der Washington University, wo er später auch im Board of Trustees tätig war. Fossett etablierte sich als erfolgreicher Börsenhändler in Chicago und gründete seine eigene Firma Marathon Securities, bevor er nach Beaver Creek, Colorado, zog. Seit seiner Jugend engagierte sich Steve Fossett in der Pfadfinderbewegung und erhielt für sein Engagement den Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. Er war auch Mitglied der Royal Geographical Society und des Explorers Club. Ab 1968 war er mit Peggy Viehland verheiratet, die Ehe blieb kinderlos. Fossett erlangte Bekanntheit durch zahlreiche Rekorde in verschiedenen Disziplinen, darunter Segeln, Motor- und Segelflug sowie Ballonfahren. Er überquerte 1995 als erster Mensch den Pazifik in einem Ballon. Nach mehreren Versuchen gelang ihm 2002 die erste Allein-Nonstop-Weltumrundung in einem Ballon. 2004 stellte er einen Geschwindigkeitsweltrekord für Luftschiffe auf. Im März 2005 umrundete er mit dem Global Flyer als erster Pilot allein und ohne Zwischenstopp die Welt. Im Februar 2006 brach er den Langstreckenrekord für Alleinflüge. Im Hochseesegeln stellte Steve Fossett ebenfalls Bestmarken auf, unter anderem für die schnellste Atlantiküberquerung. Er durchschwamm 1985 den Ärmelkanal. Er plante mit einem Tiefsee-Tauchboot den ultimativen Tiefentauchrekord, was er aber nicht mehr verwirklichen konnte. Am 3. September 2007 startete Steve Fossett zu einem Flug, von dem er nicht zurückkehrte. Nach umfangreichen Suchaktionen wurde er zunächst als vermisst und später für tot erklärt. Im September 2008 wurden Gegenstände und später das Wrack seines Flugzeugs gefunden. Eine DNA-Analyse bestätigte im November 2008, dass die gefundenen Knochen von Steve Fossett stammten.

Pilot Steve Fossett has landed the Virgin Atlantic Airways GlobalFlyer aircraft at NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Shuttle Landing Facility. The aircraft is being relocated from Salina, Kan., to the Shuttle Landing Facility to begin preparations for an attempt to set a new world record for the longest flight made by any aircraft. An exact takeoff date for the record-setting flight has not been determined and is contingent on weather and jet-stream conditions. The window for the attempt opens in mid-January, making the flight possible anytime between then and the end of February. NASA agreed to let Virgin Atlantic Airways use Kennedy's Shuttle Landing Facility as a takeoff site. The facility use is part of a pilot program to expand runway access for non-NASA activities.
