Ravi Shankar war ein indischer Musiker und Komponist, der am 7. April 1920 in Varanasi geboren wurde und am 11. Dezember 2012 in San Diego verstarb. Er war vor allem für sein Sitar-Spiel bekannt und trug maßgeblich zur Popularisierung indischer Musik im Westen bei. Shankars frühe Jahre waren geprägt von Reisen durch Europa und Indien mit der Tanzgruppe seines Bruders Uday. Er lernte verschiedene Instrumente und das Tanzen. 1938 gab er das Tanzen auf, um sich dem Sitar-Spiel unter Allauddin Khan zu widmen, einem renommierten Hofmusiker. Nach seiner Ausbildung arbeitete Shankar als Komponist und war von 1949 bis 1956 Musikdirektor bei All India Radio in Neu-Delhi. Ab 1956 begann Shankar, in Europa und Amerika aufzutreten und zu lehren. Er knüpfte Kontakte zu Musikern wie Yehudi Menuhin und George Harrison von den Beatles. Diese Begegnungen trugen dazu bei, das Interesse an klassischer indischer Musik im Westen zu wecken. Shankar experimentierte auch mit westlicher Musik und schrieb Instrumentalkonzerte für Sitar und Orchester. Von 1986 bis 1992 war Shankar Mitglied des indischen Parlaments. Er erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, darunter Indiens höchsten zivilen Orden, den Bharat Ratna, und vier Grammy Awards. Bis kurz vor seinem Tod trat Shankar weltweit auf, oft gemeinsam mit seiner Tochter Anoushka. Ravi Shankar starb nach kurzer Krankheit im Dezember 2012 in San Diego.
