Matthew Fontaine Maury war ein US-amerikanischer Marineoffizier und Hydrograf, der am 14. Januar 1806 in Spotsylvania, Virginia geboren wurde und am 1. Februar 1873 in Lexington verstarb. Seine seemännische Ausbildung führte ihn mit Lafayette zurück nach Frankreich und er nahm an einer Weltumseglung teil. Nach seiner Ausbildung diente Maury einige Jahre als Seeoffizier, bis eine Verletzung seine aktive Dienstzeit beendete. Allerdings konnte er bei der Marine bleiben und widmete sich dem Studium von Logbüchern. 1842 wurde er Direktor des Archivs der Seekarten und später des Nautischen Observatoriums in Washington, D.C. Dort erkannte er das Potential der gesammelten Wetter- und Seeganginformationen in den Logbüchern. Maury hatte die Vision, dieses Wissen allen Kapitänen zugänglich zu machen, um die Seefahrt sicherer und effizienter zu gestalten. Er veröffentlichte Wind- und Strömungskarten, die Reisen erheblich verkürzten. Er initiierte meteorologische Beobachtungen auf Schiffen und regte die erste Internationale Hydrografische Konferenz an. Seine 1855 veröffentlichte "The Physical Geography of the Sea" gilt als erste Beschreibung der physikalischen Ozeanographie und wurde in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt. Im Bürgerkrieg schloss sich Maury den Südstaaten an und leitete deren Küstenverteidigung. Nach dem Krieg wurde er Professor am Virginia-Militärinstitut. Er setzte sich für die Theorie eines eisfreien Nordpolarmeeres ein, die sich später als falsch herausstellte. Maury war überzeugt, dass die Erforschung des Meeres nur durch internationale Zusammenarbeit gelingen kann und organisierte eine internationale Konferenz, bei der einheitliche Standards für die Sammlung von Wetterdaten beschlossen wurden.

This small 1915 memorial was placed by the Daughters of the Confederacy where Commander Matthew Fontaine Maury, USN/CSN known in history as the "Pathfinder of the Seas" for his oceanography work once lived in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The house is long gone and only this half-buried memorial remained. City grass mowers chipped it partly away. This memorial is the basis of a project that saves this American history. Memorial by Maury's native state of Virginia in 1923. This is only part of a large vertical granite stone in which the plaque is embedded showing a closeup of the image. It was here that Maury's coach carrying his body from Virginia Military Institute, Lexington Virginia, was paused as Maury's request before dying before continuing onward to Richmond Virginia's Hollywood cemetery to be placed between two US Presidents. This spot was Maury's favorite area of relaxation. When Maury died at his home at V.M.I. his body had lain in state at the V.M.I. library. His chest was covered with his medals given to him. At the head of his coffin was a large globe and the anchor, seen in a photo, donated by the state of Tennessee. The anchor was wrapped around the granite stone where this image is located. The Maury Monument in Richmond, Virginia reflects the globe at the head of his coffin showing people at sea, and in a fierce storm, struggling to survive because both was M F Maury himself spent his life's work struggling for.
