François III. d’Orléans-Longueville, Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney, James Stewart, 1. Earl of Moray, James, Duke of Rothesay, James Stewart, Adam Stewart, Robert Stewart, John Stewart, Jean Stewart
17th century map of London, originally started by W.Hollar, student of German engraver Mattheus Merian. Published in the Netherlands. It is not clear where this town plan of London was published. Judging by the double portrait at the top, the map was published after Parliament installed joint monarchs William III and Mary Stuart in 1689. The map was composed by the famous designer and engraver from Prague Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677). He adopted, and excelled in, a style best suited to chorography or delineation of cities. He received instructions from Mattheus Merian (1593-1650) in Frankfurt and was active in several European towns. From 1652 until his death Hollar lived and worked in London
MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS (1542-1587). Document signed ('Marie') as Queen of France, Blois, 12 November 1559.
In French, on vellum, one membrane, 235 x 580mm, countersigned by Mary's secretary, Pierre de Grantrye, papered seal. Provenance: sale at Sotheby's, 16 December 2004, lot 36.
The 16-year old Queen of France and Scotland appoints a cupbearer. Mary appoints Philibert du Croc as her first cupbearer ("premier eschançon") after the death of the previous incumbent. The document orders her 'Chevalier d'honneur', the 'maistresse de n[ot]re hostel' and the 'contrerolleur [sic] de n[ot]re chambre' to enter du Croc's name in the accustomed way and to accord to him the accustomed prerogatives and fees of his office.
The appointment dates from the young Mary's brief reign as Queen of François II of France, which was to end with François's death just over a year later. Philibert du Croc was to reappear in Mary's story a few years later as French ambassador to Scotland: he attempted, with limited success, to mediate between the two sides during the Battle of Carberry Hill (15 June 1567), which effectively ended Mary's reign.

Reconstruction of the bedchamber of Mary, Queen of Scots at Bolton Castle. The room is the original room but the furnishings are typical of those that would have been found there. She was held at the castle from July 1568 until January 1569 and occupied the rooms usually used by Lord Scrope the castle's owner. She was allowed her own domestic staff.
