Ulrich gründete 1970 mit seinem Bruder Bernd und zwei weiteren Musikern die volkstümliche Musikgruppe "Die Amigos". Der große Erfolg stellte sich erst nach einer Umbildung der Band Anfang der 2000er Jahre ein. Ab 2004 erreichten sämtliche Alben der "Amigos" Gold- und Platin-Status. 2009, 2010 und 2012 wurde die Band mit der "Krone der Volksmusik" ausgezeichnet, 2001 gewannen sie den Echo in der Kategorie "Künstler/Künstlerin/Gruppe Volkstümliche Musik". Karl-Heinz Ulrich ist verheiratet und hat einen Sohn.
