John Updike war ein US-amerikanischer Schriftsteller, der am 18. März 1932 in Reading, Pennsylvania geboren wurde und am 27. Januar 2009 verstarb. Er hinterließ ein umfangreiches Werk, bestehend aus Romanen, Kurzgeschichtensammlungen, Essays und Gedichtbänden.
Updike wuchs in ärmlichen Verhältnissen auf einer Farm in Shillington auf. Seine Mutter förderte sein Interesse am Schreiben. Nach seinem High-School-Abschluss erhielt er ein Stipendium für ein Anglistik-Studium in Harvard, das er 1954 mit Auszeichnung abschloss. Während seiner Studienzeit arbeitete er bei der Universitätszeitschrift Harvard Lampoon mit. Er heiratete 1953 Mary Pennington und verbrachte mit ihr ein Jahr in Oxford. Dort lernte er E.B. und Katharine White kennen, die ihm eine Mitarbeit beim "New Yorker" anboten.
Von 1955 bis 1957 arbeitete Updike als Redakteur beim "New Yorker", wo erste Gedichte und Kurzgeschichten von ihm veröffentlicht wurden. Danach zog er nach Ipswich und widmete sich ganz dem Schreiben. Sein erster Gedichtband "The Carpentered Hen" erschien 1958, sein erster Roman "The Poorhouse Fair" folgte im Jahr darauf. Viele seiner Romane spielen in Neuengland, darunter "The Centaur" und "The Coup". Nach seiner Scheidung von Mary Pennington heiratete Updike 1977 Martha Bernhard und lebte mit ihr in Georgetown, Massachusetts. John Updike starb im Alter von 76 Jahren an Lungenkrebs.
