John Stones ist ein englischer Fußballspieler, der am 28. Mai 1994 in Barnsley geboren wurde. Seine Laufbahn begann im Jahr 2001 in der Jugendabteilung des FC Barnsley. Dort schaffte er den Sprung in die erste Mannschaft und debütierte am 17. März 2012 in der Football League Championship.
In der Saison 2013/14 wechselte Stones zum FC Everton in die Premier League. Sein erstes Spiel absolvierte er dort am 14. September 2014. Nach einer erfolgreichen Saison mit dem Verein, die im Erreichen des fünften Platzes gipfelte, nahm er in der Folgesaison an der Europa League teil. Sein erstes Tor in der Premier League schoss Stones am 26. April 2015 gegen Manchester United.
Zur Saison 2016/17 unterschrieb Stones einen Vertrag bei Manchester City. Dieser Transfer machte ihn mit einer hohen Ablösesumme zum teuersten Abwehrspieler zu diesem Zeitpunkt. Mit Manchester City feierte Stones einige Erfolge, darunter der Gewinn des Ligapokals im Jahr 2018 und die englische Meisterschaft am Ende derselben Saison.
Auch in der englischen Nationalmannschaft spielte Stones eine wichtige Rolle. Sein Debüt gab er am 6. September 2012 in der U19-Auswahl. Er nahm an der U20-Weltmeisterschaft 2013 teil und kam später auch in der U21-Nationalmannschaft zum Einsatz. Am 30. Mai 2014 debütierte Stones in der A-Nationalmannschaft. Er nahm an der Weltmeisterschaft 2018 teil, bei der er zwei Tore erzielte und mit seinem Team den vierten Platz belegte. Auch bei der Europameisterschaft 2021 und der Weltmeisterschaft 2022 war er Teil des englischen Kaders. Zu seinen Erfolgen zählen der Gewinn der Champions League 2023, die Klub-Weltmeisterschaft 2023, der UEFA-Super-Cup-Sieg 2023, sechs englische Meistertitel, zwei Pokalsiege, vier Ligapokalsiege und ein Supercupsieg.
