Sie stammt aus einer Familie mit künstlerischem Hintergrund, denn ihr Vater ist der Schauspieler Joel Grey und ihr Großvater war der Komiker und Musiker Mickey Katz. Ihre Karriere begann 1984 mit einer Rolle in "Reckless – Jung und rücksichtslos". Danach folgten Auftritte in "The Cotton Club", "Die Sieger – American Flyers" und "Ferris macht blau". Der große Durchbruch gelang Grey 1987 mit dem Film "Dirty Dancing", in dem sie die Rolle der Frances "Baby" Houseman spielte. Diese Rolle brachte ihr eine Golden Globe-Nominierung ein. Anfang der 1990er-Jahre unterzog sich Grey einer Nasenoperation, die jedoch negative Auswirkungen auf ihre Karriere hatte. Ihr verändertes Aussehen führte dazu, dass sie Schwierigkeiten hatte, an frühere Erfolge anzuknüpfen. In der Folgezeit war Grey hauptsächlich in Fernsehfilmen zu sehen. Eine Ausnahme bildete ihre Mitwirkung in dem Kinofilm "Bounce – Eine Chance für die Liebe" im Jahr 2000. 2010 gewann Grey die amerikanische Tanzshow "Dancing with the Stars". Von 2014 bis 2017 übernahm sie die Hauptrolle in der Serie "Red Oaks". Im Jahr 2018 wurde sie in die Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences berufen. Grey veröffentlichte 2022 ihre Autobiografie mit dem Titel "Out of the Corner". Jennifer Grey war mit Matthew Broderick liiert und später kurzzeitig mit Johnny Depp. Sie heiratete Clark Gregg, mit dem sie eine Tochter hat, die Ehe wurde aber geschieden.
