Janis Joplin war eine US-amerikanische Rock- und Bluessängerin, die am 19. Januar 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas geboren wurde und am 4. Oktober 1970 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien verstarb. Joplin wuchs in Osttexas auf, ihr Vater arbeitete für eine Ölgesellschaft, ihre Mutter war Büroangestellte. In ihrer Jugend interessierte sie sich für Kunst, las viel und sang im Kirchenchor. In der High School wurde sie jedoch ausgegrenzt und gemobbt. Schließlich entdeckte sie die Blues- und Folk-Musik für sich. Nach ihrem High-School-Abschluss zog sie nach Kalifornien, um Sängerin zu werden. Ihre ersten Auftritte hatte sie in Texas. Sie sang in Kneipen und Folk-Clubs, wobei sie sich autodidaktisch durch Schallplatten von Bluesgrößen wie Bessie Smith schulte. Mit ihrem einzigartigen Gesangsstil wurde sie zur "Queen des weißen Bluesrock". 1966 zog sie nach San Francisco und schloss sich Big Brother and the Holding Company an. Der Auftritt beim Monterey Pop Festival 1967 war ein großer Erfolg. Es folgten Plattenverträge und das Album "Cheap Thrills". Nach den Studioaufnahmen reiste Joplin nach Nepal. Ende 1968 trennte sich Joplin von der Band und gründete die Kozmic Blues Band, um neue musikalische Wege zu gehen. Der Auftritt beim Woodstock-Festival 1969 war von Alkohol geprägt. Es folgten Fernsehauftritte und eine Europatournee. Im Januar 1970 löste sich die Band auf. Im April 1970 formierte Joplin ihre dritte Band, die Full Tilt Boogie Band. Im Sommer 1970 trat sie im Festival Express Train auf. Im September 1970 begann sie mit den Aufnahmen zu ihrem Album "Pearl". Am 3. Oktober war sie das letzte Mal im Studio. Am 4. Oktober 1970 wurde Janis Joplin tot in ihrem Hotelzimmer gefunden. Sie starb an einer Überdosis Heroin.
