Harald V. ist ein König, der am 21. Februar 1937 auf Gut Skaugum, Asker, geboren wurde. Er regiert Norwegen seit dem Tod seines Vaters Olav V. im Januar 1991. Harald entstammt dem Haus Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg und ist der erste norwegische König seit Olav IV., der in Norwegen geboren wurde. Sein Wahlspruch lautet "Alt for Norge". Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs verbrachte Prinz Harald einige Zeit in Schweden und den USA, bevor er 1945 mit seiner Familie nach Norwegen zurückkehrte. Er besuchte die Smestad skole und die Oslo Katedralskole, bevor er seine Ausbildung an der Militärakademie und dem Balliol College in Oxford abschloss. Nach dem Tod seines Großvaters wurde sein Vater Olav V. König, wodurch Harald selbst zum Kronprinzen wurde. Er übernahm bereits 1958 Aufgaben als Kronprinzregent. 1968 heiratete Kronprinz Harald Sonja Haraldsen, eine Bürgerliche, im Osloer Dom. Die Zustimmung seines Vaters erfolgte erst nach neun Jahren, da dieser Bedenken hinsichtlich der Auswirkungen einer bürgerlichen Ehe auf die Monarchie hatte. Das Paar hat zwei Kinder: Märtha Louise und Haakon. Harald ist mittlerweile fünffacher Großvater. Im Jahr 2003 wurde bei König Harald V. Blasenkrebs diagnostiziert und er wurde operiert. Kronprinz Haakon übernahm vorübergehend die Amtsgeschäfte. Einige Jahre später, 2005, musste sich der König einer weiteren Operation wegen einer Aortenstenose unterziehen, woraufhin Haakon erneut seine Aufgaben übernahm. Später erhielt er wegen Atemproblemen eine neue Herzklappe und 2024 wurde ihm während eines Aufenthalts in Malaysia ein Herzschrittmacher eingesetzt. Als König hat Harald V. hauptsächlich repräsentative Aufgaben. Er eröffnet jährlich das Storting und bestätigt die Regierungsbeschlüsse. Er pflegt enge Beziehungen zu den Streitkräften und empfängt wöchentlich den Ministerpräsidenten und den Außenminister. Neben seinen königlichen Pflichten ist Harald V. ein begeisterter Segler. Er nahm an den Olympischen Spielen teil und wurde 1987 Segelweltmeister. Die Prinz-Harald-Küste in der Antarktis trägt seinen Namen.
