Emma Thompson ist eine britische Schauspielerin, Filmproduzentin und Drehbuchautorin, die am 15. April 1959 in Paddington, London, geboren wurde. Sie stammt aus einer Schauspielerfamilie, ihre Mutter Phyllida Law und ihr Vater Eric Thompson waren ebenfalls im Showgeschäft tätig. Auch ihre Schwester Sophie Thompson ist Schauspielerin. Schon während ihres Studiums am Newnham College in Cambridge entdeckte Thompson ihre Leidenschaft für die Bühne. Sie trat in Theaterstücken und Sketchen mit späteren Comedy-Größen wie Stephen Fry und Hugh Laurie auf. Nach dem Studium begann sie ihre professionelle Schauspielkarriere. Sie wirkte in der Comedy-Sendung "Alfresco" mit und spielte im Musical "Me and My Girl". Eine wichtige Rolle spielte sie 1986 in der BBC-Serie "Fortunes of War", wo sie ihren ersten Ehemann, Kenneth Branagh, kennenlernte. Kurz darauf erhielt sie ihre eigene Sitcom "Thompson". Der Durchbruch gelang Thompson 1992 mit dem Film "Wiedersehen in Howards End", für den sie sowohl einen Golden Globe als auch einen Oscar erhielt. Später wirkte sie in Hollywood-Produktionen wie "Junior" mit Arnold Schwarzenegger mit. Neben ihrer Schauspielkarriere etablierte sie sich auch als Drehbuchautorin. Für das Drehbuch zu "Sinn und Sinnlichkeit" (1995) wurde sie mit ihrem zweiten Oscar ausgezeichnet. Thompson ist die einzige Person, die sowohl für ihre schauspielerische Leistung als auch für ein Drehbuch mit einem Oscar geehrt wurde. 2010 erhielt sie einen Stern auf dem Hollywood Walk of Fame. Thompson war von 1989 bis 1995 mit Kenneth Branagh verheiratet. Seit den Dreharbeiten zu "Sinn und Sinnlichkeit" ist sie mit Greg Wise liiert, den sie 2003 heiratete. Sie haben eine gemeinsame Tochter und adoptierten einen ruandischen Flüchtling. Im Jahr 2018 wurde Emma Thompson zur Dame Commander des Order of the British Empire ernannt.
