Doris Day war eine US-amerikanische Filmschauspielerin und Sängerin, die am 3. April 1922 als Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, geboren wurde und am 13. Mai 2019 in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Kalifornien, USA, verstarb. Vor ihrer Schauspielkarriere trat Doris Day als Sängerin in verschiedenen Bands auf. Der Song "Sentimental Journey", den Day im Orchester von Les Brown sang, wurde 1944 zum Nr-1-Hit und bedeutete ihren Durchbruch als Sängerin. In "Zaubernächte in Rio" hatte Doris Day 1948 ihren ersten Filmauftritt. In diesem wie auch einigen anderen folgenden Filmen wurden die von Day gesungenen Titel zu Hits, der Song "Secret Love" aus dem Western-Musical "Schwere Colts in zarter Hand" erhielt eine Oscar-Auszeichnung. 1956 trat sie an der Seite von James Stewart im Hitchcock-Thriller "Der Mann, der zuviel wusste" auf. Der von ihr gesungene, Oscar-nominierte Titel "Que Sera, Sera" wurde zu ihrem Erkennungszeichen. Mit "Bettgeflüster" hatte Doris Day 1959 an der Seite von Rock Hudson einen ihrer größten Erfolge. Mit den folgenden Filmkomödien festigte Day ihr Image als "sittsame Hausfrau", wofür sie später immer mehr auch Spott erntete. Ende der 1960er Jahre zog sie sich vorläufig aus dem Filmgeschäft zurück und drehte bis 1973 die Sitcom "The Doris Day Show". Mitte der 1970er Jahre zog sie sich aus der Öffentlichkeit zurück. Sie betrieb in Carmel-by-the-Sea ein kleines Hotel und engagierte sich verstärkt für den Tierschutz, wofür sie mehrfach ausgezeichnet wurde. Doris Day war viermal verheiratet, aus der Ehe mit dem Posaunisten Al Jordan stammte ihr 2004 verstorbener Sohn Terry.
