Chick Corea war ein US-amerikanischer Musiker, der am 12. Juni 1941 geboren wurde und am 9. Februar 2021 verstarb. Corea war einer der wichtigsten Jazz-Pianisten und Komponisten seiner Zeit und gilt als Mitbegründer des Jazzrock. Er lernte schon als Kind von seinem Vater, einem Bandleader, Klavier. Dabei standen zunächst klassische Komponisten im Fokus. Früh entdeckte Corea seine Leidenschaft für Jazz, besonders Soul-Jazz. Er nannte Jazzmusiker wie Horace Silver und Bud Powell, aber auch klassische Komponisten wie Mozart und Beethoven als seine größten Einflüsse. Seine ersten größeren Auftritte hatte er mit bekannten Musikern wie Cab Calloway und Mongo Santamaría. 1966 nahm Corea sein erstes Soloalbum "Tones for Joan’s Bones" auf. Zwei Jahre später folgte "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs", das ihm in der Jazzwelt Bekanntheit verschaffte. 1968 ersetzte Corea Herbie Hancock in der Band von Miles Davis und wirkte an wichtigen Alben wie "Filles de Kilimanjaro", "In a Silent Way" und "Bitches Brew" mit. 1970 verließ Corea Davis, um mit Dave Holland, Barry Altschul und Anthony Braxton ein Quartett zu gründen. Ein Jahr später gründete Corea die Fusion-Band Return to Forever, mit der er mehrere Alben aufnahm und einen Grammy gewann. Nach der Auflösung von Return to Forever tourte Corea mit Herbie Hancock und nahm Soloalben auf. In den 1980er Jahren gründete Corea die Elektric Band und das Label Stretch Records. Er arbeitete weiterhin mit verschiedenen Musikern zusammen und veröffentlichte Alben in verschiedenen Genres. 2006 führte Corea sein zweites Klavierkonzert in der Wiener Staatsoper auf. Später kehrte Corea zum Jazzrock zurück und gründete die Five Peace Band mit John McLaughlin. Corea war Mitglied von Scientology, was zu Kontroversen führte. Corea starb im Alter von 79 Jahren an einer seltenen Krebserkrankung.

A series of jazz musician oriented street name signs within the western edges of the Jamaica section of Queens, New York City. This sign is on the corner of Lloyd Road and the northbound service road for the Van Wyck Expressway, and honors Chick Corea, one of the few musicians in this series of signs who are still alive as of this writing.
