Charlton Heston war ein US-amerikanischer Schauspieler und Bürgerrechtler, der am 4. Oktober 1923 geboren wurde und am 5. April 2008 verstarb. Bereits als Kind wurde er "Chuck" genannt. Nach der Scheidung seiner Eltern nahm er den Nachnamen seines Stiefvaters und den Geburtsnamen seiner Mutter als Vornamen an. An der High School entdeckte er sein schauspielerisches Talent und studierte später Schauspiel. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs diente er in der Air Force. Nach dem Krieg arbeitete er als Model, lernte seine Frau Lydia Clarke kennen und leitete ein Theater in North Carolina. 1947 kehrte er nach New York zurück und feierte sein Broadway-Debüt. Durch seine Rollen in der Fernsehserie "Studio One" wurde Hollywood auf ihn aufmerksam. William Dieterle gab ihm eine Hauptrolle in "Stadt im Dunkel", und Cecil B. DeMille besetzte ihn in "Die größte Schau der Welt". Der endgültige Durchbruch gelang ihm mit "Die zehn Gebote". In den 1950er und 1960er Jahren war Charlton Heston ideal für Monumentalfilme und spielte überlebensgroße Charaktere. Er verkörperte Helden in Filmen wie "El Cid" und "Die größte Geschichte aller Zeiten". Seinen größten Erfolg feierte er mit der Titelrolle in "Ben Hur", für die er einen Oscar gewann. Als die Monumentalfilme weniger wurden, wechselte Heston ins Science-Fiction-Genre und spielte in Filmen wie "Planet der Affen" und "…Jahr 2022… die überleben wollen". Bis in die späten 1970er Jahre war er ein gefragter Darsteller und spielte in Katastrophenfilmen mit. Später übernahm er Rollen in Fernsehserien wie "Das Imperium – Die Colbys". 2003 spielte er seine letzte Filmrolle als Josef Mengele. Kurz zuvor hatte Charlton Heston seine Alzheimer-Erkrankung öffentlich gemacht. Heston war von 1965 bis 1971 Präsident der Screen Actors Guild und engagierte sich politisch. Ursprünglich liberal, unterstützte er Martin Luther King und setzte sich für Bürgerrechte ein. Später wechselte er zu den Republikanern und vertrat konservative Positionen. Er wurde Präsident der National Rifle Association (NRA) und setzte sich für das Recht auf Waffenbesitz ein. Ab 1944 war er mit Lydia Clarke verheiratet und hatte zwei Kinder. Charlton Heston starb im Alter von 84 Jahren.
