Billy the Kid war ein Revolverheld, der am 17. September oder 23. November 1859 geboren wurde und am 14. Juli 1881 verstarb. Seine genaue Herkunft ist unklar, aber er kam vermutlich in New York oder Indiana zur Welt. Gemeinsam mit seiner Mutter Catherine und seinem Bruder Joseph zog er später nach Kansas und dann nach New Mexico, wo seine Mutter einen neuen Ehemann fand. Sie starb jedoch bald darauf an Tuberkulose. Schon in jungen Jahren soll Billy the Kid in Saloons verkehrt und dort sein Talent beim Glücksspiel entdeckt haben. Er geriet in Schwierigkeiten, als er angeblich einen Mann erstach, der seine Mutter beleidigt hatte. Danach floh er und soll in Arizona einen weiteren Mord begangen haben. Er setzte seine Flucht nach Mexiko fort, wo er sich mit Melquiades Segura anfreundete und erneut in einen Mordfall verwickelt gewesen sein soll. Zurück in den USA schloss sich Billy der Evans Gang an und nannte sich William H. Bonney. Er geriet in den Lincoln County Rinderkrieg, wo er auf verschiedenen Seiten kämpfte und an mehreren Morden beteiligt war. Nach dem Krieg wurde ihm eine Amnestie versprochen, doch er fühlte sich betrogen und stahl Vieh, was ihn zum Gejagten machte. Schließlich wurde Billy the Kid von Sheriff Pat Garrett gefasst, konnte aber aus dem Gefängnis fliehen, bevor er von Garrett erschossen wurde.
