Raquel Welch war eine US-amerikanische Schauspielerin, die am 5. September 1940 in Chicago, Illinois geboren wurde und am 15. Februar 2023 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien verstarb. Welch wuchs in Kalifornien auf und war das älteste von drei Kindern eines bolivianischen Ingenieurs und seiner Frau. Eine ihrer Cousinen war sogar Präsidentin von Bolivien. Nach der High School nahm sie Ballettunterricht und gewann einen Schönheitswettbewerb. Nach ihrem Highschool-Abschluss begann sie ein Theaterstudium, welches sie aber wegen ihrer Heirat abbrach. Zunächst arbeitete Welch als Fotomodell und kurzzeitig als Wettermoderatorin im Lokalfernsehen. Nach der Scheidung zog sie als alleinerziehende Mutter mit wenig Geld nach Los Angeles. Dort wurde sie von einem Presseagenten entdeckt, der ihre Vermarktung übernahm und ihr einen Filmvertrag verschaffte. Ihre erste kleine Rolle hatte sie 1964 in einem Musikfilm mit Elvis Presley. Der internationale Durchbruch gelang ihr 1966 mit dem Film "Eine Million Jahre vor unserer Zeit", in dem sie mit einem knappen Fell-Bikini für Aufsehen sorgte. In den 1960er und 1970er Jahren war Welch in zahlreichen Filmen zu sehen, darunter "Die phantastische Reise" und "Die drei Musketiere". Obwohl sie oft als Sexsymbol wahrgenommen wurde, erhielt sie für ihre Rolle in "Die drei Musketiere" einen Golden Globe Award. Ende der 1970er Jahre zog sie sich vorübergehend aus dem Filmgeschäft zurück, kehrte aber später mit Aerobic-Videos und Auftritten am Broadway zurück. In den 1990ern feierte Welch Erfolge mit der Produktion von "Victor/Victoria", gefolgt von weiteren Film- und Fernsehprojekten, darunter eine Rolle in "Natürlich blond". Ihre letzte Rolle hatte sie 2017. Welch versuchte sich auch als Sängerin, trat in Fernsehshows auf und veröffentlichte Singles. Im Jahr 2010 veröffentlichte sie ihre Autobiografie. Welch war viermal verheiratet und hat zwei Kinder aus ihrer ersten Ehe, darunter die Schauspielerin Tahnee Welch. Nach ihren Scheidungen lebte sie nach eigenen Angaben glücklich alleinstehend in Beverly Hills.
