José Plácido Domingo Embil ist ein spanischer Opernsänger, Dirigent und Opernintendant, der am 21. Januar 1941 in Madrid geboren wurde. Er zählt zu den bedeutendsten Opernkünstlern des 20. und frühen 21. Jahrhunderts und wurde als Mitglied der „Drei Tenöre“ gemeinsam mit José Carreras und Luciano Pavarotti weltweit bekannt. Als Sohn zweier Zarzuelasänger wuchs Domingo ab 1949 in Mexiko auf und gab dort auch seine ersten Bühnenauftritte, bevor seine internationale Karriere Mitte der 1960er-Jahre begann. In den folgenden Jahrzehnten sang Domingo an nahezu allen großen Opernhäusern der Welt. Sein Repertoire umfasste außergewöhnlich viele Rollen und reichte von italienischen und französischen Opern bis hin zu Wagner-Partien und zeitgenössischen Werken. Besonders berühmt wurde er für seine Interpretation des Otello von Giuseppe Verdi. Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Tenor trat er später zunehmend auch als Bariton auf. Zusätzlich wirkte Domingo als Dirigent und leitete bedeutende Opernhäuser in Washington und Los Angeles. Mit dem Gesangswettbewerb Operalia förderte er gezielt den internationalen Opernnachwuchs. Darüber hinaus engagierte er sich stark für wohltätige Zwecke, insbesondere nach Naturkatastrophen. Trotz großer Erfolge wurde seine Karriere ab 2019 durch Vorwürfe sexueller Belästigung überschattet, auf die öffentliche Reaktionen und Rücktritte folgten.
