Pat Metheny ist ein US-amerikanischer Jazzgitarrist, der am 12. August 1954 in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, geboren wurde. Er etablierte sich seit Mitte der 1970er Jahre als einflussreicher Jazzmusiker, sowohl als Solokünstler als auch mit eigenen Formationen, insbesondere der Pat Metheny Group, die einen besonderen Ensembleklang entwickelte. Metheny begann seine musikalische Reise mit acht Jahren an der Trompete, wechselte aber mit zwölf zur Gitarre, inspiriert von Wes Montgomery. Schon mit 14 Jahren gewann er einen Gitarristenwettbewerb des Jazzmagazins Down Beat und nahm an einem Lehrgang teil. Bereits als Teenager spielte er mit Jazzgrößen in Kansas City. Mit 18 Jahren wurde er Dozent für Gitarre an der University of Miami, gefolgt von einer Stelle am Berklee College of Music in Boston. Im Laufe seiner Karriere arbeitete Pat Metheny mit zahlreichen Jazzgrößen zusammen, darunter Gary Burton, Jaco Pastorius und Herbie Hancock. Er spielte auch mit Künstlern wie Joni Mitchell und David Bowie zusammen. Eine besondere Verbindung pflegte Metheny zu brasilianischen Musikern und unterstützte die Karrieren von Jazzmusikerinnen wie Silje Nergaard. Von 1978 bis 2005 existierte die Pat Metheny Group, die er mit Lyle Mays gründete. Die Gruppe veröffentlichte im Januar 2005 ihr letztes Album "The Way Up". Metheny spielte auf seinen Alben und Konzerten eine Vielzahl von Gitarren, darunter seine 42-saitige Pikasso-Gitarre, und setzte häufig Gitarrensynthesizer ein. Für seine Leistungen wurde Pat Metheny vielfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit 20 Grammys. Metheny ist mit der französisch-marokkanischen Fotografin Latifa Metheny verheiratet und hat mit ihr Kinder. Sein Bruder Mike Metheny ist Flügelhornist und Musikjournalist.
