Maurice Ravel war ein französischer Komponist, der am 7. März 1875 in Ciboure geboren wurde und am 28. Dezember 1937 in Paris verstarb. Er war neben Claude Debussy einer der wichtigsten Vertreter des musikalischen Impressionismus. Sein bekanntestes Werk ist das Orchesterstück "Boléro", das ursprünglich als Ballettmusik gedacht war.
Ravel wuchs im Baskenland auf, bevor seine Familie nach Paris zog. Er erhielt ab dem siebten Lebensjahr Klavierunterricht und später auch Unterricht in Harmonielehre. Am Pariser Konservatorium lernte er Ricard Viñes kennen, mit dem ihn eine lebenslange Freundschaft verband. Trotz seines Interesses an einer Pianistenlaufbahn konzentrierte sich Ravel später auf das Komponieren. Er kehrte 1897 an das Konservatorium zurück und studierte Komposition bei Gabriel Fauré.
Um 1900 schloss sich Ravel der Gruppe "Les Apaches" an, einer Gruppe von Künstlern, die sich den Konventionen widersetzten. In diesem Kreis präsentierte er viele seiner neuen Kompositionen, darunter die "Miroirs". Ravel bewarb sich fünfmal um den Prix de Rome, scheiterte aber jedes Mal, was zu einer öffentlichen Kontroverse führte. Trotzdem etablierte sich Ravel als Komponist, auch wenn seine Werke oft kontrovers aufgenommen wurden.
Während des Ersten Weltkriegs diente Ravel im Sanitätsdienst. Nach dem Krieg zog er in die Villa "Le Belvédère" in Montfort-l’Amaury, wo er bis zu seinem Lebensende wohnte. Ravel blieb unverheiratet und kinderlos. In seinen späteren Jahren litt Ravel unter gesundheitlichen Problemen. Nach einem Autounfall im Jahr 1932 verlor er die Fähigkeit zu komponieren. 1937 unterzog er sich einer Gehirnoperation, aus der er nicht mehr erwachte. Ravel wurde auf dem Friedhof von Levallois-Perret beigesetzt.
