Manfred Mann ist ein Musiker, der am 21. Oktober 1940 in Johannesburg geboren wurde. Eigentlich heißt er Manfred Sepse Lubowitz und er stammt aus Südafrika. Bekannt wurde er mit der Band Manfred Mann, die er 1962 gründete. Später spielte er noch mit der Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, die seit 1971 besteht. Manns Eltern waren jüdische Einwanderer. Sein Vater arbeitete als Drucker, seine Mutter war Pianistin. In seiner Jugend lernte Manfred Klavier spielen und trat in Johannesburg als Jazzmusiker auf. Zusammen mit seinem Schulfreund Harry Miller nahm er zwei LPs mit der ersten südafrikanischen Rock-’n’-Roll-Band The Vikings auf. Er studierte auch klassische Musik. 1961 beschlossen Mann und Miller, nach England auszuwandern, auch weil Mann das Apartheid-Regime ablehnte. In Großbritannien arbeitete er als Jazzpianist, Musiklehrer und schrieb Artikel unter dem Pseudonym Manfred Manne. Später verkürzte er den Namen zu Manfred Mann. 1962 gründete Mann mit Mike Hugg die Mann Hugg Blues Brothers. Die Band wurde in Manfred Mann umbenannt und erhielt einen Vertrag bei EMI. 1966 verließ Sänger Paul Jones die Band und wurde durch Mike d’Abo ersetzt. Die Band löste sich 1969 auf, aber Teile der Band blieben als The Manfreds zusammen. Die Band spielte Jazz, Soul und Rhythm and Blues und hatte Hits wie "My Name is Jack", "Fox on the Run" und "Ha! Ha! Said the Clown". Ihre Coverversion von "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" wurde 1964 ein Nummer-eins-Hit in den USA. Manfred Mann war auch für seine Coverversionen von Bob-Dylan-Songs bekannt. Vor der Auflösung von Manfred Mann arbeitete Mann mit Mike Hugg an einem neuen Projekt namens Emanon. Daraus entstand Manfred Mann Chapter III. Die Band spielte Jazzrock mit Synthesizern. Nach zwei nicht sehr erfolgreichen Alben gründete Mann 1971 die Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, mit der er sich der Rockmusik zuwandte. Manfred Mann änderte seinen Stil zu progressivem, von Synthesizern beeinflusstem Rock. Die Earth Band löste sich 1988 auf, wurde aber 1991 von Mann wiederbelebt. 1999 verklagte Mann Massive Attack wegen Urheberrechtsverletzung. 2004 erschien das Album "2006". 2014 erschien das Album "Lone Arranger". Manfred Mann wirkte auch an anderen Projekten mit.
