Manfred Mann ist ein südafrikanischer Musiker, der am 21. Oktober 1940 in Johannesburg geboren wurde. Bekannt wurde er durch die 1962 gegründete Band "Manfred Mann" und später durch die 1971 ins Leben gerufene "Manfred Mann’s Earth Band". Als Sohn jüdischer Einwanderer begann er seine musikalische Laufbahn als Jazzpianist und spielte früh in südafrikanischen Rock-’n’-Roll-Gruppen. 1961 wanderte er nach England aus, um der Apartheid zu entkommen und dort als Musiker Fuß zu fassen. In London gründete er die Band, die bald zahlreiche Hits in Großbritannien und den USA landete, darunter „Do Wah Diddy Diddy“ und Coverversionen von Bob Dylan. Nach verschiedenen Bandformationen und Besetzungswechseln wandte sich Mann stilistisch immer mehr dem Jazz, Soul, Rock und Synthesizer beeinflusstem Progressive Rock zu. Besonders erfolgreich war seine Earth Band mit Songs von Bruce Springsteen wie „Blinded by the Light“. Nach einer Bandauflösung 1988 orientierte sich Mann neu und gründete Projekte wie "Manfred Mann’s Plain Music". 1991 reformierte er die Earth Band, die seitdem vor allem live aktiv ist. 1999 verklagte Mann "Massive Attack" wegen unautorisierter Nutzung von Samples. In den 2000er Jahren veröffentlichte er mehrere Alben, darunter „Lone Arranger“ (2014), mit bekannten Musikern und zahlreichen Coverversionen.
